DESCRIPTION
UC San Diego Health Sciences encompasses UC San Diego Health, the region’s only academic health system, UC San Diego School of Medicine, one of the nation’s top research-intensive medical schools, Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Southern California’s first public school of pharmacy, and Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science. UC San Diego Health Sciences’ mission is to deliver outstanding patient care through commitment to the community, groundbreaking research and inspired teaching. The division of Medical Education within the UC San Diego School of Medicine consists of the following units: Undergraduate Medical Education, Admissions & Student Affairs, Diversity and Community Partnerships, Graduate Medical Education, Continuing Medical Education & Faculty Development, Simulation Education, Physician Assistant Education, Anatomical Services, Business Affairs and Educational Technology. The division supports the education, training and co-curricular activities of approximately 560 medical students, 90 physician assistant students, 1000 residents and fellows as well as the faculty, physician and healthcare providers at UCSD’s School of Medicine, its’ Medical Centers, and affiliates.
The Admissions & Student Affairs unit has primary responsibility for creating a positive learning environment and supportive medical school community. A cornerstone of UCSD’s medical education curriculum is its academic communities. Each incoming medical student is assigned to one of six academic communities, an affiliation maintained their entire medical school career. Each community is led by a faculty director, in addition to faculty members who provide mentoring, counseling, and support. The goals of the academic communities are to 1) optimize advising and mentoring of medical students, 2) optimize the teaching of clinical skills, and 3) better integrate student along all four years of medical school.
Under the close supervision of higher level student affairs professionals, the Student Affairs Specialist uses student life professional concepts and practices to assist with organizing a variety of student services and co-curricular programs, such as student clubs, businesses and organizations, and residence hall activities, new and transfer student orientation and transitional programs, and conducting workshops. Provides basic support and advising to students.
The Student Affairs Specialist uses professional student services theories and concepts to perform a range of duties and responsibilities within a Student Affairs program. Will provide support for and planning of programs and special events for medical students, including orientation, white coat ceremony, commencement, community outreach, career planning, curricular and social activities. Provides limited advising for students to include Student Interest Groups (SIGs) and university policies and procedures. Provides programmatic support to the UC San Diego School of Medicine’s academic communities and serves as a resource for the academic community faculty Directors (ACD’s). Represent Medical Education in campus-wide activities and serves on division and campus-wide committees.
As the Communication Liaison, for the Office of Student Affairs (OSA), the incumbent will work collaboratively with the SOM Communications Office to help increase visibility of student life at the School of Medicine.
Primary responsibilities include serving as the first point of contact to fulfill communications requests related to student affairs programming, events (including, but not limited to, first-year orientation, White Coat Ceremony, Match Day, Commencement-related activities, wellness, academic advising, etc.) and digital media needs (photography, videography and social media). On behalf OSA, the liaison will assist in project management for communications related initiatives such as the production of marketing materials and logistics for events, ensuring that OSA’s action items are completed on time.
In addition, the liaison will support the creation of stories/content by the communications team including the ideation and coordination of feature stories, facilitation of story reviews/approvals with OSA stakeholders, and fact checking for student life related content and stories while ensuring publication deadlines are met. The coordinator/liaison must be proactive and take the initiative to communicate regular updates with the SOM Communications Office outside of regularly scheduled meetings.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Four years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor’s degree in related area.
Basic knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
Basic knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs.
Interpersonal skills.
Skills in service orientation, active listening, critical thinking, and facilitation.
Knowledge and understanding of the needs of a diverse student population.
Verbal communication, written communication and organization skills.
Abilities in problem identification, reasoning.

Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $34,200 – $79,000 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $16.38 – $37.84
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
