DESCRIPTION
The Senior Hydrologist leads CW3E’s development and improvement of the Community Hydrologic Prediction System (CHPS) and the Hydrologic Ensemble Forecasting System (HEFS). A key component of this position is the development of research and operations partnerships between CW3E and water managers across the western U.S. to facilitate more effective watershed management. The incumbent will manage and oversee programs and projects related to Western hydrology, observations, and climate change with a focus on collaboration with NOAA’s River Forecast Centers in the western U.S. The incumbent ensures that projects are completed on time, within budget, and delivered with high quality; develops detailed tasks and procurement plans; oversees day-to-day activities of the team; and regularly interfaces and coordinates with team members to track progress, schedules, budgets, and deliverables. Leads and authors scientific journal publications; and translates research findings into information that can be easily understood by both experts and non-experts and will be responsible for gathering all information for and writing comprehensive progress reports.
The Senior Hydrologist will assume a key role in supporting the Forecast-Informed Reservoir Operations (FIRO) viability assessments and ensuring the timely completion of preliminary and final viability assessments for new FIRO projects – to include HEFS aspects such as re-forecasts / scaled events); providing real-time, quasi-operational input into FIRO decision making; and liaising closely with water managers at CW3E-supported FIRO projects during the annual wet season to facilitate the transfer of hydrologic research into practical applications that improve the effectiveness of reservoir operations for flood control, water supply resilience, and sustainable ecosystems.
QUALIFICATIONS
Advanced degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training in Hydrology;Terminal degree in a related field (PhD, JD, MD, etc.)
Academic background and experience in selected area of research. Expertise in hydrologic research and prediction. Graduate degree in hydrology, atmospheric science, or related field.
Demonstrated ability to collect, record and interpret experimental data. Must be able to read and summarize scientific articles pertaining to the prosecution of broad research problems in hydrologic prediction, and proceed without specific direction.
Advanced oral and written communication skills. Experience writing technical and non-technical science reports and papers as the audience dictates. Similarly, experience presenting to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Advanced ability to think creatively and independently on concepts requiring advanced analytical skills. Demonstrated ability to problem solve and identify gaps and provide solutions. Demonstrated leadership and ability in creative program development and strategic planning; project and proposal development.
Advanced interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse groups to achieve results.
Advanced ability to work collaboratively with internal and external peers and managers. Ability to identify strengths and weaknesses of the staff and researchers. Integrate researchers’ efforts to ensure collaboration and efficiencies in meeting project deliverables.
Highly skilled fundraising experience. Demonstrated experience in coordinating and writing proposals
Advanced knowledge of administrative, budgetary, human resources and financial principles and practices. Broad-based knowledge and experience in managing program finance, budget-planning, and review
Ability to navigate a highly matrixed organization effectively.

Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $78,900 – $179,900 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $37.79 – $86.16
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
