DESCRIPTION
The newly established UCSD Center of RNA Technologies for Therapeutics (aka the RNA Center) develops robust, reproducible, and quantitative technologies and machine-learning methods that enable fundamental discoveries in RNA biology in gene regulation, health, and disease, thereby enabling the creation of RNA-based approaches as tools for science and therapeutics. We will train the next generation of RNA engineers, scientists, and entrepreneurs with a commitment to translating our scientific discoveries into improving human health.
The RNA Center serves as a nexus for technology development and application in the field of RNA research and therapeutics across UCSD and beyond. It is comprised of (1) a core facility that provides cutting-edge services in the area of custom RNA and protein production and transcriptome-wide analyses, and (2) a programmatic and administrative hub that coordinates grant funding acquisition and develops and implements strategies and programs to support RNA research, foster collaborations among RNA researchers, and coordinate outreach efforts.
The Science Writer and Program Manager, under the general supervision of the Center’s Director and in close cooperation with the Center’s three Associate Directors, will be an integral member of a team that supports the Center’s mission. Key responsibilities include collecting and maintaining required records for Center and grant-supported programs and performance metrics to evaluate and measure productivity/success. Incumbent will work collaboratively and taking a leading role in supporting the Center’s program development and scientific leadership team, as well as outside research investigators to ensure timely completion of scientific projects, submissions of successful funding applications, and high-impact publications.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Advanced degree in related life sciences or engineering discipline and / or equivalent experience / training.
Three (3) or more years of relevant experience.
Academic background and experience in selected area of research required. Advanced theoretical knowledge in a biological science, plus experience in research grants or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Strong oral and written communication skills. In-depth experience writing about science for both technical reviewers and the public as well as writing science proposals for government agencies and private grant-making foundations. Excellent communication / presentation skills using different sources of presentation media. Proven track record to communicate effectively and garner high levels of credibility.
Experience working in a scientific research environment. Understanding of the role of research and grant funding in a major research university.
Proven program planning and management of projects. Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize multiple projects.Ability to complete work and meet established deadlines in an accurate and timely manner, and to manage short and competing deadlines.
Experience with planning and leadership of operational and research/development initiatives. Demonstrated management skills with the ability to maintain focus and to operate in an organized and effective manner in an environment that may have rapidly shifting demands and priorities.
Strong ability to think creatively and independently on concepts requiring advanced analytical skills. Depth of skills in project management, autonomously identifying issues and opportunities for process improvements, project scoping (goals/outcomes of a project, timelines, and work-plans, necessary resources, etc.), identifyingpartner roles and responsibilities and driving the implementation of a projectto achieve determined outcomes
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse groups to achieve results.
Strong ability to work collaboratively with internal and external peers, managers and teams.
Demonstrated attention to detail to ensure proper and consistent editorial formatting of large grant submissions.
Self-starter with the ability to work independently and deliver in a timely fashion.
Demonstrated experience in scientific writing.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience with grant management tracking systems and databases, experience utilizing web portals for grant submission to various agencies.
Knowledge of UC policies and procedures relating to research, and research facilities, as well as knowledge of campus structure, research programs, databases, and systems.

Annual Full Pay Range: $63,400 – $142,800 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $30.36 – $68.39
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
