non-credit tracks to international and domestic high school students the opportunity to live on campus and enjoy the summer at Berkeley;
allowing students to enroll in
Berkeley courses, get involved in extracurricular activities and excursions, workshops and take advantage

The Mission of Summer Sessions is to create safe and inclusive living learning
communities that foster holistic education and global citizenship. Summer Sessions’ vision reflects a commitment to the intentional
creation of effective and innovative programs aimed at developing students to be engaged campus and global citizens, and active agents of
social change. The Assistant Resident Directors and the live-in student staff they supervise accomplish this through a combination of
educational events, community building activities, student empowerment and personal development conversations.
Under the supervision
of the Pre-College Professional Staff led by the Director of New Student & Pre-College Programs, Pre-College Scholars Program Manager,
and Residential Operations Administrator, the Assistant Resident Director (ARD) is responsible for working collaboratively and assisting in
the development and direct implementation of a residence life program in an assigned hall (Bowles Hall or Stern Hall) which houses
approximately 60-200 students and will assist with the management of approximately 21 Resident Assistant & Mentors (RAMs) student
staff.

The Pre-College
Scholars Program will host two live information sessions for interested applicants to learn more about the program, job role &
responsibilities, and training. The information sessions will also serve as an opportunity for interested applicants to ask questions. Below

Goals of the Internship:
● To
serve as part of a leadership team for the residential component of the Pre-College Scholars Residential Program, consisting of the
Assistant Dean of Summer Sessions, Assistant Director of Risk & Compliance, Director of New Student & Pre-College Programs,
Pre-College Program Manager, Residential Operations Administrator, and other Pre-College & professional staff.
● To assist in
creating an effective and supportive residential community among Pre-College Scholars Program students who are international or domestic
high school minors.
● To supervise a team of Resident Assistant Mentors (RAMs) as they oversee the Pre-College Scholars residential
cohort.
● To address needs for Pre-College Residential Program residence hall opening and closing.
● To support the academic
mission of the university through residential education initiatives within the Division of Summer Sessions & Study Abroad
.
Pre-College Scholars Residential Program DUTIES
Student Staff Support and Training
● Assist with the supervision,
training, and evaluation of paraprofessional staff members: approximately 21
Resident Assistant Mentors as part of a larger, overall
Pre-College Scholars staff. Meet weekly, in scheduled one-on-ones, with staff members to provide guidance and support.
● Attend and
participate in all aspects of mandatory staff training, starting on Sunday, June 2, 2024.
● Assist in conducting regular weekly hall
staff meetings on Tuesdays from 7-9PM.
● Facilitate regular staff development sessions designed to provide additional training and team
building for building staff and staff in the unit.
● Coordinate hall duty schedule to ensure appropriate weekend, evening, and holiday
coverage for the unit.
Community Development
● Oversee the organization and implementation of safe and inclusive living and
learning communities through educational and community building programs that support the success and development of residential
students.
● Serve as a campus and community resource for students and staff by advising, providing guidance in planning programs and
activities, and providing resources for passive programming (placement of events posters and visuals).
● Encourage the personal,
social and academic development of residential students. This responsibility involves spending a significant amount of time in the building
and getting to know residents on an individual basis. “Significant amount of time” should include but is not limited to the
following: being able to assist students, attending programs and building meetings, and maintaining visibility.
● Display
appreciation of differences and assist students in developing an understanding of diverse cultures and lifestyles. Respect and treat all
individuals fairly and equitably by being open and understanding of sexual orientation, socioeconomic, cultural, religious & ethnic
diversity issues.
● Model ethical behavior through personal and academic pursuits and adhere to all Bowles & Stern Hall
policies.
● Model leadership and engagement through active participation in Pre-College Scholars program (i.e orientations,
presentations, excursions, events, activities, etc) and encourage staff and residents to participate in the Pre-College Scholars program
events and activities.
● Work collaboratively with fellow ARDs to design and promote community building activities among residents in
both Residential Halls.
● Work cooperatively with students to ensure an environment in the hall that displays respect for the rights,
dignity, and privacy of others and promotes consideration of individual needs in a group living environment.
● Respond to student
behavior that is inappropriate and in violation of campus and program policies and procedures, such as behavior which endangers the health
and safety of residents and behavior which results in damage to University property.
● Act as a mediator in conflict situations when
needed (i.e. roommate conflicts, staff conflicts, noise disruptions, etc.) abiding by program policy and utilizing restorative justice
practices.
● Relay student concerns regarding residential living (i.e. policies, procedures, services, maintenance, etc.) to the
Pre-College Scholars program staff.
● Encourage a living/learning environment through academic integration activities and programs
and encourage staff to plan programs involving campus partners.
● Model good COVID-19 health and safety behavior, abide by and
enforce campus’s most recent COVID-19 health and safety requirements.
● Support RAMs in upholding curfew hours; Mon – Sun
10pm – 6am.
● Conduct regular weekly check-ins with the Resident Assistant Mentors to ensure all students are thriving in the
program and to identify any needs for additional support in community building and programming efforts.
● Be present and welcoming during
student arrivals to campus and assist with supporting students and staff on the day of departure.
● Accompany program participants to the
urgent care, or hospital in case of an incident.
● Oversee and support RAM planning and implementation of welcome events on student
arrival day for each session.
● Oversee social events on campus and trips to off-campus destinations (day, evening and weekends).

Assume additional responsibilities as assigned.
Student Conduct
● Serve as a conduct hearing officer as stipulated by the
Pre-College Scholars Residential Program policies and ensure timely and accurate documentation of incidents and forward to the Pre-College
team when appropriate.
● Assist in the enforcement of policies in the unit and the implementation of an educational judicial
process.
● Consult with the Director of New Student & Pre-College Programs, Pre-College Program Manager, Residential Operations
Administrator, and other Pre-College professional staff on conduct action.
Counseling, Crisis Management, and Emergency Response
●
Serve as a member of the staff on-call duty rotation supporting both Residential Halls (Bowles & Stern)
● Provide appropriate
referral counseling to students and consult with Counseling and Psychological Services as needed.
● Respond directly to crisis
situations.
● Assist in the direction of paraprofessional staff and ensure timely and appropriate reporting of information to the
appropriate Pre-College Scholars Residential Program staff.
● Inform and update the Director of New Student & Pre-College Programs,
Pre-College Programs Manager,
Residential Operations Administrator, Assistant Dean of Summer Sessions, Assistant Director of Risk
& Compliance, and other professional staff of Summer Sessions on ALL Incidents.
● Work closely with the Pre-College Scholars
staff, UCPD, the Berkeley fire department, and the University Fire Marshall to develop, implement and evaluate response to fire, earthquake,
and other significant safety issues.
Administration
● Write weekly reports that include activities, programs, and a general
assessment of the Pre-College Scholars Residential Program.
● Maintain ongoing communication with the University and Pre-College Scholars
Program staff as necessary to ensure an appropriate exchange of information.
● Oversee and coordinate all RAM event planning and
purchasing for Friday socials including ensuring RAMs abide by purchasing and event planning guidelines, facilitating RAM event purchases
using Event Planner Card, and ensuring RAMs return all items to the Pre-College Scholars program after use.
● Assist in conducting
pre-arrival room walk-throughs to ensure student rooms are ready for move-in
● Coordinate Pre-College Scholars Residential opening and
closing.
● Coordinate occupancy management of units including room assignments, switches, transfers, and cancellations.
● Support the
approval process for students’ overnight/after-curfew leave by helping students navigate the process for approval, which would be
reviewed and approved by the Pre-College professional staff.
● Perform or assist with COVID-19 Badge screening (if necessary).
● Work
with the Director of New Student & Pre-College Programs, Pre-College Program Manager, Residential Operations Administrator, and other
Pre-College professional staff to complete an end-of-program report.
Related Duties
● Meet on a regular weekly basis with the
Director of New Student & Pre-College Programs, Pre-College Programs Manager, Residential Operations Administrator, and other
professional staff about staff/student concerns, programming and unit administration.
● Attend any necessary meetings as
instructed.
● Duties as assigned by the Director of New Student & Pre-College Programs, Pre-College Program Manager, Residential
Operations Administrator, and other Pre-College professional staff.
● Assist in the planning and facilitating of Pre-College Scholars
Resident Assistant & Mentor training.
Internship Expectations
Interns are expected to work approximately 40 hours per week.
Hours are flexible and will be arranged with the Director of New Student & Pre-College Programs, Pre-College Program Manager,
Residential Operations Administrator, and Pre-College professional staff. Interns should expect to have periods in which required workloads
and hours vary.
The ARDs will work collaboratively and share responsibility for duty rotation coverage and emergency crisis response for
incidents that take place across all Residential Halls.
Residential Hall Assignments & Periods of
Employment:

The Stern
Hall internship’s start date is Sunday, June 2, 2024 and end date is Saturday, July 27, 2024. Due to the critical nature of the
position ARDs are not permitted to hold another job, internship, or additional work position during the term of employment.
The
Bowles Hall internship’s start date is Sunday, June 2, 2024 and end date is Saturday, August 10, 2024. Due to the critical nature of
the position ARDs are not permitted to hold another job, internship, or additional work position during the term of employment.
It is
most important that interns perform to the best of their ability in the intern situation. The internship is to be considered like any other
professional position or job with the same standards of reliability and quality of work.
● Maintain professional attitude,
appearance, and work ethic at all times.
● Work as scheduled; be punctual, dependable, and use good judgment.
● Report problems
immediately to the Director of New Student & Pre-College Programs, Pre-College Program
Manager, Residential Operations
Administrator, and Bowles Hall & Stern Hall staff so problems may be resolved.
● Participate fully in all Pre-college Scholars
Residential Program operations.
● Due to the nature of this position, during the term of employment ARDs are expected to not be in
possession of or under the influence of substances prohibited to minors (including but not limited to drugs and alcohol). While on-duty,
ARDs are expected to remain in the building. Failure to comply with performance expectations on the job will result in disciplinary action
including termination.
With supervisor**
● Complete an initial plan of learning objectives and expectations
● Complete a
mid-summer self-evaluation and progress report
● Create an experience portfolio at the end of the internship
**These may be
adjusted slightly if the Intern already has similar expectations from their home institution.
Compensation:
●
Assistant Resident Directors are provided with the equivalent of a stipend of $750 per week, a private furnished room and a meal plan
throughout the duration of their internship.
● There is no on-site parking for personal vehicles provided through this role so if you
are bringin a personal vehicle you will be responsible for obtaining parking. Assistant Resident Directors are responsible for their
transportation costs to & from Berkeley and during the internship.
● The Assistant Resident Directors assigned to Bowles Hall (3)
will be paid a stipend of $7,500 (8 weeks + 2 weeks training) and the Assistant Resident Director (1) assigned to Stern Hall will be paid a
stipend of $6,000 (6 weeks + 2 weeks of training)
● The stipend is paid in four installments and is subject to state & federal
income tax withholding. Please note that the stipend will not be dispersed until July and, therefore, it is crucial to plan accordingly. The
stipend pay schedule will be shared during the June training.

● Assistant Resident Directors are required
to abide by the UC COVID-19 Vaccine Requirements and the Flu Shot Mandate.
● Assistant Resident Directors are required to abide by the
most current campus face-covering requirement.
● This Position requires the completion of CANRA and other program specific training.
