We boldly go. We are currently hiring a Lead Engineer, Thermal Systems Modeling . In this role, you will employ the thermal sciences in the analysis and evaluation of systems that produce a refrigerating, heat pumping, air-conditioning, or heating function. Thermodynamics is the foremost discipline, augmented with heat and mass transfer along with fluid dynamics. This role influences the Advanced Technologies and SBU customers in developing next generation refrigerant technologies for the entire Trane Technologies applications portfolio. The ideal candidate will have a strong background and experience in refrigerant systems for heating and cooling applications as well not-kind-technologies. This position is eligible for a Hybrid work schedule (3 or more days onsite a week) and will be based out of our Davidson, NC / La Crosse, WI / Bloomington, MN / or St. Paul, MN office locations. Responsibilities: – Support development and enable implementation of the next generation of refrigerants with low environmental impacts covering all product areas. – Gather information about prospective refrigerants from refrigerant manufacturers, review of technical and patent literature, and other sources. – Develop and/or utilize tools to model the thermodynamic properties of prospective refrigerants. – Conduct analyses to evaluate and screen refrigerant candidates for further development. – Direct laboratory testing of units to determine performance of candidate refrigerants in real equipment.Process data to fully understand and interpret performance characteristics. – Prepare reports and presentation for internal dissemination of information.Prepare and present technical papers for external audiences to support the company’s strategic directions. – Support other technology areas requiring a foundation in thermal sciences, especially the thermodynamics of mixtures. – Correlating and describing the properties of refrigerant/lubricant mixtures. – Evaluation of desiccant dehumidification, both liquid and solid, for air conditioning purposes. And modeling and evaluation of other sorption processes. – Evaluation of new and innovative technologies including but not limited to Not-in-kind heating and cooling technologies as they appear for potential commercial value, either as disruptive competition or prospective new products or services for the company. Qualifications: – Master’s degree in mechanical engineering or Chemical engineering (PhD Degree preferred). – 5+ years of advanced refrigeration systems experience in the areas of refrigerants, non in-kind cooling technologies, advanced vapor compression (including heat pumps), dehumidification and desiccants. (Strong experience in Modeling is highly recommended) – Internally and externally recognized subject matter expert in refrigerants and thermal systems. – Strong understanding of the principles of fundamental thermodynamics.Understanding of the equations of state for describing the thermodynamic properties of refrigerants, including mixtures. – Strong foundation in single-phase and phase-change (boiling and condensation) convective heat and mass transfer.Knowledge of conductive and radiative heat transfer. – Knowledge in fluid mechanics. – Strong understanding of the vapor compression cycle and component performance characteristics. – Understanding of chemistry and chemical reactions. – Capability to build computational tools (Excel, Matlab) to execute evaluations and analyses of data. – Ability to formulate a problem, efficiently execute an analysis, and clearly summarize conclusions and recommendations. – Develop intellectual property in collaboration with the research and development team to strengthen company strategy and position. – Solid skills for writing reports and papers and presenting relevant material to others. – Ability to interact and communicate with others in a collegial manner. – Excellent verbal, written, presentation and interpersonal skills. Able to convey business implications of complex technical findings and externally represent the best interests of the company. – Knowledge in Refrigerant and Lubricant Systems, in HVACR systems also desired. – Research and intellectual property portfolio management experience with a track record of patents and publications a plus. – Externally networked with relevant supply base and industry associations beneficial. – Experience in working with global teams.
