· Performs landscaping activities such as planning and layout of projects, planting and cultivating shrubs, trees, and flowers. Inspects, and monitors the conditions of the landscape to assess horticultural or environmental problems.
· Performs insect and disease identification, soil evaluation, and other evaluative techniques. Determines and takes appropriate remedial action. Leads, instructs, and advises personnel in plant species, erosion control, fertilization, pruning, irrigation.
· Utilizing GIS and electronic equipment to conduct urban forest stand inspections to keep tree inventory records, track tree health care maintenance, installation, and removals. Assess each tree for a wide variety of fields/attributes (e.g., Common Name, Scientific Name, DBH, Condition, Height, Crown Spread, Insect Issues, Diseases, Defects, Size of Defect, Probability of Failure, Target Frequency, Other Risk Fields, Site Type, Address, etc.).
· Create and maintain native garden inventory and plant database. Assist with tracking and recording maintenance of campus trees and gardens, etc. Create and manage GIS asset datasets using field computers and survey tools. Assist with annual reports to the Facilities Management Planning Department. Prepare task order maps for contracted maintenance, removals, and installations. Responsible for keeping equipment assigned in good operating order.
· Lead and assist with procurement and propagation of native plants. Perform training, design, editing, site selection, soil preparation, and installation of native plants. Collaborate and share native plant information with departments and organizations. Assist with monitoring and reporting maintenance with greenhouse growing operations.
· Pest and disease control using Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies. Ensures adequate plants, seeds, supplies, materials, and equipment are available for assigned projects and applications of natural and synthetic pesticides to landscape as appropriate including meadows, native gardens, and fields.
· Operates a computer to enter, retrieve, review, or modify data; verify accuracy of entered data and makes corrections; manipulate database. Utilize university software for email, timesheet, personal expense report, online annual training, etc.
· Operates landscaping equipment such as aerifiers, sprayers, forklifts, power, and hand tools. Ensures the operational safety and readiness of equipment; cleans equipment and performs routine maintenance and repairs.
· This is an essential position for campus emergencies, events and snow removal and other duties as assigned.
· Standard Work Hours are 6:00am-2:30pm.
Qualifications and Skills
· Bachelor’s degree.
· Two years in a lead role in horticulture, forestry, or landscape maintenance work, or atleast two years of full-time experience in a lead role with arboriculture, landscape maintenance, or construction.
· An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered on a year for year basis.
Preferred:
· Environmental Science, GIS knowledge, Certified Maryland Tree Expert, Maryland Certified Profession Horticulturist, or certification from approved related industry associations.
