The Opportunity
This position provides leadership and guidance for the University on tax matters. The University is a dynamic and complex organization and reports and pays taxes to various Federal and State agencies. This position leads the University in terms of conducting tax research, evaluating new and emerging issues, and giving expert advice to various University departments and staff on tax-related compliance matters.
The Tax Officer is responsible for managing, planning, accounting, research, compliance and audit defense as needed to develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure the University complies with federal, state, and international tax laws. This person works closely and collaboratively with the Office of General Counsel in the interpretation and analysis of tax law changes and their associated implications.
The Tax Officer develops strategies to minimize tax exposure through sound and informed application of tax laws and regulations. This position reports to the university Controller in the Office of the Treasurer.

Education/Experience
The successful candidate will hold a bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or related business field with five years of tax accounting experience and/or tax research, experience with tax reporting software, EFTPS, state taxpayer access points, and tax research software.
The successful candidate will have the ability to effectively lead work group towards completion of strategic and large scale projects. Detailed knowledge of tax law as it pertains to higher education or the ability to quickly attain such knowledge is required. Excellent oral and written communication skills, strong analytical and problem solving skills, excellent computer skills, and ability to work independently. An important part of performing this job is the ability to set internal deadlines so as to successfully meet different external deadlines. Knowledge of University account structure and attributes. Ability to produce accurate tax returns, tax reporting, and calculate tax payments.
The preferred candidate will hold a Master’s degree with Knowledge of the current status of tax requirements with an emphasis on matters specifically affecting the tax exempt community. Knowledge of college and university organizational structure, knowledge of GASB statements, AICPA Audit guides, and Uniform Guidance is a plus; experience with personal computers and related software, particularly with query software.
The preferred candidate will have strong analytical skills with the capability to further develop analytical skills and provide reporting surrounding University data. Skills with the following – SAP or other similar integrated information systems, Microsoft Office products including high proficiency in Excel.

Compensation for the position will be competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience within the market range.
