Description:
RESEARCH ASSISTANT PROFESSOR POSITION
EXPERIMENTAL LOW-ENERGY NUCLEAR PHYSICS GROUP
UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE – KNOXVILLE
The Experimental Low-Energy Nuclear Physics Group at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK) is currently seeking candidates for a research assistant professor position in direct reaction studies. The UTK group performs experiments using ORRUBA, a large array of silicon detectors, to measure charged particles from transfer reactions. The group has played a significant role in the development of the GODDESS combined array of ORRUBA and Gretina. In collaboration with partners at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), Rutgers University, and the University of Notre Dame, the group performs transfer reaction experiments with GODDESS at Argonne National Laboratory and the ReA beamlines at FRIB.
The group actively engages in experiments at FRIB and takes pride in having led a knockout experiment on light tin isotopes in the first year of FRIB operations. The group is also developing techniques for proton transfer reactions using the NEXT and HAGRiD arrays to measure neutrons and gamma rays.
The successful candidate will be based at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and will be required to travel to experiments and conferences. As a research assistant professor, they will have responsibilities, such as overseeing the group’s operations, conducting data analysis, contributing to the development and maintenance of GODDESS, NEXT, or HAGRiD, and preparing and conducting experiments. This role will involve working closely with graduate and undergraduate students. The successful candidate will be expected to pursue their own research related to nuclear reactions and astrophysics, including the preparation of beamtime proposals.
The UTK group has established a strong reputation for conducting experimental structure studies of nuclei far from stability, with a strong connection to nuclear astrophysics. The group employs direct reaction and decay methods to study the atomic nucleus. There will be many opportunities to collaborate with theorists and experimentalists both at UTK and ORNL, as well as, collaborators extending beyond East Tennessee.
The UTK campus is in one of the most beautiful areas of the country, with easy access to miles of inland waterways, and pristine state and national parks. Knoxville offers a vibrant downtown area with locally-owned restaurants and coffee houses along with an array of diverse cultural opportunities.
Qualifications:
A PhD in nuclear physics, or a related area (all PhD requirements must be fulfilled by August 2023). The successful candidate should have demonstrable experience with experiments at accelerator facilities, as well as, excellent programming and data analysis skills, using C and CERN ROOT. Preference will be given to candidates with at least 1-2 years of post-doctoral research. The position will be available from Summer 2023 for three years and may be extended for an extra two years, depending on funding. An ideal candidate would have experience with GEANT and CAD design, as well as, experience running and analyzing direct reaction experiments. Knowledge of the reaction analysis codes TWOFNR and FRESCO would be an advantage.
