Job Summary:
The Mechanical and Utility Engineer provides direction to the utility disciplines; engineers, designs, and lays out work in conjunction with the needs of the water, HVAC, electrical, steam utilities, and the steam/power plant. They will develop projects in conjunction with the master plan including project designs, engineering, and estimates and proposed schedules. This individual will also be responsible for organizing and participating in design/construction teams, reviewing design plans and specifications and estimates, and influencing and managing construction budgets. The position provides engineering for the Utility Superintendents and implements and ensures compliance with campus standards.
This individual must be familiar with standard concepts, contractual mechanisms and procedures, practices, and technical procedures within the engineering field. This individual provides technical guidance and design services for smaller renovations, relies on engineering experience and judgement to plan and accomplish tasks, utilizes a certain degree of creativity and latitude, and works independently with minimal supervision. This position provides good customer service to both internal and external customers.
Qualifications
Job Functions/Responsibilities:
· Responsible for the design, engineering, evaluation, planning, and project oversight of mechanical equipment, systems, or processes to meet campus specifications and needs.
· Investigate equipment failures
· Collaborate with other engineers and utility personnel on utility and capital projects per the master plan
· Specify system components or engineer modification of products to ensure conformance with engineering design and performance standards and specifications
· Develop and maintain campus mechanical standards and oversee the tracking and recording of emissions for environmental regulations reporting
· Responsible for management and leading design and construction progress meetings
· Propose, develop, and perform cost analysis for mechanical or electrical system improvement projects and complete documentation for bidding and coordinate construction of the project.
· Prepare and administer contracts for mechanical system based on mechanical engineering knowledge and principals
· Lead, engineer, and design integrated mechanical or alternative systems such as mechanical cooling systems with natural ventilation to improve energy efficiency to meet campus carbon initiatives and goals
· Select combined heat units, power units, co-generation equipment, or tri-generation equipment that reduces energy use or pollution based on engineering knowledge and principals
· Evaluate and engineer mechanical designs for energy performance or environmental impact
· Calculate energy losses and metrics for buildings to maximize efficiency
· Oversee the tracking and recording of emissions for environmental regulations reporting
· Responsible for the reporting of emissions to all reporting agency on monthly, bi-annual, and annual basis as required to meet regulatory agency requirements
· Seek opportunities to understand, assist and teach the technicians in the field on the mechanical systems and the design of the systems.
· Lead the mechanical group in planning for campus utility infrastructure for the campus and future campus building
· Seek additional training in order to enhance or add capabilities; and maintain PE license per state requirements.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
· Knowledge and skill to design mechanical systems such as: HVAC, steam distribution, boilers, hot water, pumps, air and chemical feed.
· Ability to understand the above systems and the relation of each within a campus building as well as campus as a whole.
· Ability and knowledge to analyze data to generate reports and to substantiate projects.
· Knowledge of EPA reporting.
· Basic knowledge of electrical systems.
· Observation skills
· Ability and skill to solve mechanical system problems.
· Ability to communicate in a clear and concise manner.
Minimum Qualifications:
· Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering
· Registered Professional Engineer (PE) in Tennessee or with the ability to obtain registration by reciprocity in Tennessee
· 6 years of Mechanical engineering design experience
· Valid Tennessee Driver’s License
