The Center for Global Engagement, (CGE), is hiring a Communications Manager to lead our communication and outreach efforts. CGE is comprised of seven units (Asia Engagement, Communications, English Language Institute, Global Research, the International House, International Student and Scholar Services, and Programs Abroad) who are responsible for working throughout campus, across Tennessee and around the world to provide enriching and diverse international experiences for faculty, students, and scholars.
The University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK) is Tennessee’s flagship university and premier public research institution. We are an R-1 land-grant university with approximately 30,000 students, 9500 faculty and staff, 11 colleges, and over 300 degree programs. There are more than 1600 international students and scholars on the UTK campus. The University is located on a 580-acre campus in the city of Knoxville in eastern Tennessee, near the Great Smoky Mountains. The University of Tennessee Knoxville campus is seeking candidates who can contribute in meaningful ways to the diversity and intercultural goals of the University.
The City of Knoxville is a hidden gem surrounded by eight gorgeous lakes, with a beautiful and walkable downtown, a diverse music scene including internationally recognized festivals, active neighborhoods, unique restaurants, and a robust offering of diverse cultural and outdoor activities. UTK is located within easy driving distance to the Great Smoky Mountains, Atlanta, Nashville, Asheville, Charlotte, Louisville, and Cincinnati. It is only a day’s drive to Memphis, Chicago, and Washington D.C. Knoxville and the surrounding counties have a population of more than 850,000 people.
Qualifications
Position Summary
The Communications Manager will manage the Center for Global Engagement’s communications, which are highly visible, high-impact communications that serve key audiences for the university, particularly students, faculty, faculty leadership, and deans. This position will develop marketing and communications plans and achieve goals set by the Center’s strategic vision document Global Vision. Working with the center’s leadership team, the position will determine the creative direction, visual tone and strategic purpose of the Center’s communications in alignment with the university branding guidelines. The Communications Manager will also develop content including campus messages, stories, website, social media posts, graphics, print pieces, videos, and presentations.
Position Responsibilities
· Marketing and Communications
o Integrates multiple sources and participates in the creation of a comprehensive external and internal communication and marketing plan for the Center.
o Works collaboratively and independently in creating and developing original content for different media platforms to tell Volunteer’s global engagement stories and the overall vision and goals for CGE.
o Identifies story leads, provides creative and technical writing, editing, and proof-reading for stylistic and brand consistency across different channels such as print,
e-newsletter, website, and social media.
o Collaborates with other CGE team members to plan, design, develop and create content and creative pieces in the following areas: marketing and advertising, graphic and multimedia design, website design, social media communications, presentations, and video editing and production.
o Provides analytical assessment on communication and marketing initiatives and measure impacts.
o Assisting with Global Health and Safety team on crisis communications
· Social Media Management, Website and E-Marketing
o Plans and develops cohesive social media campaigns designed to raise awareness and create engagement among students, faculty, and staff with CGE services and programs.
o Supervises a student assistant to manage social media accounts, including generating content, graphics, scheduling posts and providing analytics.
o Manages CGE websites: creates, provides and maintains content.
o Creates processes to monitor and assess key metrics to guide effective social merit and digital communication strategy and to increase audience engagement.
o Assists with management of Terra Dotta (TD) software.
o Manage and executes email communications program, including monthly newsletters, maintaining communication-related databases and different initiatives for CGE.
· Project Management
o Creates and manages project plans and schedules, prioritizes work to meet deadlines, and provides work direction as project lead on various tasks and assignments.
o Event management and coordination as needed across CGE.
o Works directly with faculty to assist in promotion of the faculty-directed education abroad programs.
o Coordinates other study abroad programs and special interest sessions as needed.
o Collects data and provides analytical assessment on the impact of the projects.
o Develops and implements long-term plan for data archiving and storage for all CGE units.
· Supervision
o Manages and trains full-time and student staff.
o Manages a budget based on scope of work and resource requirements, tracks costs in order to meet budget and project goals.
Education and Experience Required: Bachelor’s degree and year of professional communications experience.
Education and Experience Preferred: Three years of professional communications experience in a higher education setting.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
· Excellent written and oral communication skills.
· Strong organizational skills.
· Ability to prioritize and deliver products in a timely manner.
· Ability to effectively communicate with stakeholders with diverse backgrounds.
· Ability to be detail oriented.
· Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Creative Suite such as InDesign and Illustrator.
· Knowledge of social media management.
· Knowledge of marketing and communications best practices.
· Knowledge of international education
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:
· Familiarity with institutional branding guidelines.
· Professional understanding of crisis communications management.
· Leadership abilities including professional experience in management, training, and mentorship.
