Primary Purpose of Department:
The Department of English is a dynamic, research-intensive department with a commitment to fostering students’ abilities to think critically, to read analytically, and to communicate effectively. The English Department offers degree-concentrations in a variety of specialized areas of study: literature and culture, creative writing, language and digital technology, and pedagogy. All these concentrations promote, in their specific ways, the crucial liberal-arts skills of advanced literacy: critical reading and high-quality writing. The Department has 35 full-time faculty members and 8 part-time faculty.

Description of Work:
Responsible for the daily operation of the department and the department programs. The Department Chair/ Director will promote excellence in department programs within the University. Chair/ Director responsibilities are classified as professional duties requiring leadership and mentoring of faculty, administrative expertise to include vision, long term and short-term planning, decision-making and coordination of instruction.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The Chair of the Department of English is responsible for the daily operation of the department and the department programs. The Department Chair will promote excellence in department programs within the University. Chair responsibilities are classified as professional duties requiring leadership and mentoring of faculty, administrative expertise to include vision, long-term and short-term planning, decision-making and coordination of instruction. The Chair is expected to contribute to the research productivity and teaching of the department and to be sensitive to the needs of its areas and constituencies. The Chair will also be responsible for ensuring the egalitarian distribution of responsibilities among the faculty.
Minimum Experience/Education:
UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned doctorate or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.
Preferred Education, Skills and Experience:
The Candidate’s teaching and research should be in fields that are traditionally housed in the UNCC English Department. The candidate must: 1) have a doctoral degree, 2) hold appointment at the rank of associate or full professor in the Department of English at UNC Charlotte, 3) have administrative experience in a university setting, 4) have excellent communications skills necessary to lead a diverse, interdisciplinary department with numerous programmatic and research goals; 5) be able to manage a very heterogeneous, multidisciplinary department with different research traditions and publication goals; and 6) have a demonstrated interest in research mentorship of faculty and a commitment to integrating the department, faculty and programs into the mission of the college and the university.
