Primary Purpose of Department:
The Belk College of Business is dedicated to helping undergraduate students discover, plan, and achieve their academic and career goals, while learning to become 21st century business leaders. This individual is committed to engaging students in personal development and self-assessment, teaching students how to effectively manage their academic success and supporting students through the exploration of their major and career development plans. Students are expected to develop academic and career plans consistent with their interests, abilities, and aspirations and to utilize available resources to achieve their long-term professional goals. This individual ensures that students have access to accurate and relevant information so that they can take initiative and responsibility for their success. This individual upholds University and Belk College standards in a professional and respectful manner that reflects an appreciation for students from all backgrounds.
Primary Purpose of Position:
The Assistant Director of Academic and Career Coaching position reports to an Associate Director of Academic and Career Coaching within the Belk College of Business. This individual is tasked with counseling students through self-assessment, career exploration, and major selection process, serving as a resource for students regarding degree requirements and policies, assisting students in developing career readiness plans, directing students to academic support and other campus resources, and managing administrative tasks that help the Niblock Student Center implement its mission and document its progress.
Summary of Position Responsibilities:
The Assistant Director of Academic and Career Coaching will advise and counsel undergraduate business students in their progress toward degree completion in the Belk College of Business, coach students through the career development process, coordinate and provide group presentations and workshops, serve as a liaison to an academic department or program within the college, lead one of several major projects for the college and implement and administer University and Belk College of Business policies.
Minimum Education/Experience:
A Master’s degree in career counseling, student development, higher education, or business is required along with 1-2 years of experience in business or student counseling at an academic institution or a Master’s degree with 2+ years of experience in business or student counseling at an academic institution. Academic advising and career coaching of undergraduate-level business students is highly desirable and direct knowledge of professional development for business students and background in business administration is preferred.
The ideal candidate will possess polished interpersonal communication skills, training, and counseling skills. The candidate should demonstrate a professional demeanor that establishes credibility quickly, inspires confidence, and builds positive relationships. Excellent verbal and written communication skills including the ability to demonstrate tact, and diplomacy and maintain a high level of confidentiality are required. Outstanding presentation skills enabling effective, influential communication with a diverse group of students, faculty, staff, alumni and business community is vital to this position. Attention to detail, task orientation, and ability to work collaboratively as well as independently to achieve institutional goals and objectives is expected.
Advanced proficiency with various computer applications, Microsoft Office, and web technology are essential skills.
