ASSISTANT/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF ACTING DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT CHARLOTTE POSITION: UNC Charlotte Department of Theatre is seeking a tenure-track Assistant/Associate Professor of Acting beginning August 2024. We are seeking a highly collaborative artist/scholar/director who has expertise in contemporary acting practices with an emphasis on acting for the camera, voice and speech. Preference will be given to candidates with a strong background of directing for the stage. A 3/2 teaching load (which might include one general education course per year), the possibility of directing in the season, participation in departmental service and governance, and engagement in ongoing creative and/or scholarly research commensurate with attaining tenure at a research institution are expected. SETTING: UNC Charlotte, North Carolina’s urban research university, is located in one of the nation’s fastest growing metropolitan areas on an expanding modern campus, and is among the fastest growing universities in the UNC System (one of the oldest public university systems in the United States). UNC Charlotte offers over 30,000 culturally diverse students a wide range of undergraduate and graduate degree programs. DEPARTMENT/FACILITIES: The UNC Charlotte Department of Theatre is committed to both new and traditional stage work as well as collaborative practice and community-connected work. The Department of Theatre is part of the College of Arts + Architecture which houses the departments of Theatre, Dance, Music, Art & Art History, and the School of Architecture. Robinson Hall, our state-of-the-art performance facility, includes a 300+ seat Proscenium Theatre, intimate Black Box Theatre Lab, and an informal performance lab located in the adjacent Rowe Arts Building. Faculty, student, and guest artist works are regularly performed as part of the season of fully supported main stage productions. The Department has a full-time faculty of 13 and typically hires numerous part-time faculty and guest artists per semester. We serve over 100 Theatre majors and 40 minors. The program offers a B.A. degree in Theatre with five Concentrations: Applied Theatre; Design/Tech; Directing, Dramaturgy and Dramatic Writing; Performance; and Theatre Education. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: MFA or PhD in Performance/Acting or related area. University Teaching Experience. Demonstrated effective teaching practices. Ability to serve as a mentor in a student-centered department. A demonstrated ability to effectively collaborate with a wide range of students, faculty, and staff. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: AEA, SAG-AFTRA affiliation. Professional acting credits in Theatre/Film/TV/Media. Stage Voice, Speech, Dialects, Camera Acting, Voiceover teaching experience and/or licensure. Articulated, supported approach to addressing: What assets do you bring to serving a broad student population at an urban research campus? Proficiency in one or more of the following: Directing and/or devising experience. Stage movement, combat, physical theatre experience. Intimacy choreography experience and/or licensure. Community-engaged arts practices. Experience working in theatre of the African, LatinX, or other diaspora.
