Position Summary:
The Weiss Lab at the University of Georgia’s Complex Carbohydrate Research Center (https://ccrc.uga.edu/) is seeking a creative and enthusiastic postdoctoral fellow to drive research projects supported by a new NIGMS/NIH R35 award focused on investigating the regulation of glycosaminoglycan biosynthesis in human health and disease. These are multidisciplinary projects with enormous training opportunities in glycobiology, functional genomics, chemical biology, and drug discovery. The Weiss Laboratory utilizes a combination of biochemistry, cell biology and genomics to understand the structure, assembly and function of sulfated glycosaminoglycans found on proteoglycans. We utilize a number of techniques that offer high potential for training, including genome-wide CRISPR screening approaches, flow cytometry, mammalian cell engineering, and isolation and characterization of glycans. The postdoctoral fellow will be expected to design and evaluate experiments, develop new ideas and promote current research, and prepare and publish scientific manuscripts in collaboration with the Principal Investigator. The postdoctoral fellow may be responsible for the operation of scientific equipment and for teaching techniques to others, including training of students and supervision of research staff. Positions are temporary appointments as a research trainee. The initial appointment is for one year, and renewal is expected if progress is satisfactory. Appointments cannot exceed five years.
Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification in Position:
Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, or a related discipline. Preference will be given to candidates who have hands-on experience with CRISPR technologies and/or epigenetic/transcriptional techniques to study gene regulation. Excellent scientific writing ability and strong oral communication skills are required, as is the ability to work effectively with colleagues.
