Position Summary:
The Carnaccini lab directed by Dr. Silvia Carnaccini (DVM, PhD, DACVP and DACPV) Assistant Professor at the Department of Population Health, College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Georgia (Athens, GA, USA) is searching for students at the graduate level [PhD or Master] for a Graduate Research Assistantship to begin at their earliest convenience.
The Carnaccini’s lab is focused on studying the pathobiology of avian influenza virus, a deadly viral disease of birds with devastating consequences for the poultry industry, wildlife, and agriculture, worldwide. Our group employs a combination of novel in vitro assays, reverse genetics, histology, immunofluorescence, and transcriptomics to study the pathobiology and virus-host interaction. The lab employs different models to study influenza viruses such as tissue cultures, SPF chicken embryonated eggs, and in vivo studies. In addition, our group actively collaborates with the SMART lab of Drs. Allenspach and Mochel in the development of novel organoids models (3D self-organized stem cell clusters which mimic their organ of origin) as a substitute to in vivo testing. Our lab actively interacts with several groups within UGA and other national and international collaborators.
We are seeking motivated students to join our lab. An ideal PhD/Master’s candidate will have a strong background in molecular biology and/or virology and experience in execution of biological assays, a willingness to learn molecular biology techniques, cell culturing techniques, light and confocal microscopy and working with animals in biosafety level 2 and 3 conditions.
The Carnaccini lab and collaborators pride themselves on an inclusive and team-oriented environment with a strong publication record. The candidates will be working closely with knowledgeable fellow lab mates and must work well in a team and contribute to a positive and enjoyable work environment, aiming to advance research and utilize cutting-edge techniques.
