Normal Work Schedule: Monday – Friday 8:00am to 4:45pm, some nights/weekends.
Job Summary: The Research Assistant performs research work in support of a major research project. May order equipment and supplies, set up equipment, perform experiments, monitor results, collect data and/or prepare support material. May supervise students or other support workers assigned to the research project.
Additional Department Summary: The Research Assistant will be part of the Cognition and Intellectual Disabilities lab in the Psychology Department at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. The position is to assist with an NICHD-funded study investigating reading comprehension in children and teens with Down syndrome and other intellectual disabilities. Duties will include one-on-one testing of participants in the lab or in participants’ homes. It also includes recruiting participants, scoring and entering data, and training/supervising undergraduate students in these research activities.
Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate field based on the area of research and some experience. Graduate Assistant, Intern, or student oriented research experience will be considered. To be considered student experience, it must be detailed in the employment section on the application.
Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Psychology.
Must have valid U.S. driver’s license. Must be at least 19 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report that is in compliance with University policies. Applicants under the age of 21 will have some driving restrictions.
Skills and Knowledge: Prior training on the assessments used in the study. Prior research experience in reading comprehension. Experience with people with disabilities. Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills. Excellent computer skills, including Word and Excel.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience with individuals with Down syndrome. Coursework in cognitive psychology.
