Job Summary: The Immigration Assistant provides clerical and administrative support to students, parents, faculty, and staff regarding the processing of various immigration requirements in compliance with various federal laws and regulations regarding the enrollment and retention of international students and scholars on campus.
Additional Department Summary: The Immigration Assistant serves as a critical component of International Student & Scholar Services and performs the following duties: serves as front office management; manages student work staff in coordination with Associate Director; oversees office communications, including email, phone, and electronic newsletters; provides front-line international student and scholar support and advising; processes document requests such as travel signatures and support letters for Social Security, DMV, and bank account applications; input and maintenance of student databases; provides administrative support for office services and programs; manages the departmental calendar and scheduling.
Required Minimum Qualifications: High School diploma or GED and two years of general office experience; OR Associate’s Degree or higher. Student or Graduate Assistant, Intern, or student oriented experience will be considered. To be considered student experience, it must be detailed in the employment section on the application.
Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Must be a U.S. Citizen or U.S. Permanent Resident in order to serve as an F-1 Designated School Official (DSO) with the Department of Homeland Security’s Student Exchange Visitor Program and as a J-1 Alternative Responsible Officer (ARO) with the Department of State’s Exchange Visitor Program.
Skills and Knowledge: Ability to proficiently use University of Alabama and Department of Homeland Security data systems (SEVIS, ISSM, and Banner). Understanding of multi-cultural communication proficiencies with a high degree of cultural sensitivity. Strong customer service skills. Ability to work independently on projects as needed. Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience studying abroad or in an international services office setting. Experience working with university students.
