This position will enable sustainable packaging design for global R&D. It will require innovative ways of thinking and approaches to provide problem solving solutions and risk assessment, understanding regulatory, industry trends, and evaluation of analytical methods for current and future packages to support our company’s World Without Waste initiative; specifically, packaging material characterization for food/beverage contact use compliance. The primary responsibility includes creating analytical capability in method development and validation using state of the art techniques. This position will closely work with several cross-functional groups and proactively provide material property and performance insights to enable innovation and trademark protection. This position will also work with external professional societies, trade groups, and academics in monitoring new trends and identify new opportunity for capability improvements.
What You’ll Do
Act as subject matter expert in packaging material characterization, analytical method development and validation for packaging material property and performance assessment.
Co-Lead global Food Contact Material compliance testing projects that involves cross-functional teams and apply relevant project management routines.
Conduct routine and non-routine material characterization testing and ensure timely and accurate results.
Keep abreast of emerging trends and development in policies, regulations, and packaging material science that could impact our business.
Train junior scientists and supervise contingent workers
Communicate analytical findings and make recommendations to business partners (Global Packaging R&D, SRA, T&S, OU technical, bottlers, and suppliers etc.).
Participate in scientific, trade or professional associations to advance the Company’s sustainable business agenda.
Identify and validate of future material characterization capabilities as input to team business plan.
What You’ll Need
BS degree in Chemistry, Material Science, or equivalent qualification background required.
Ideal 8+ years relevant working experience with extensive hands-on experiences in material characterization using advanced analytical techniques. Experience in FDA, EPA, EFSA, regulatory compliance, analytical chemistry, project management, and professional association involvement are preferred.
Key Functional Skills
Strong knowledge and skills in packaging material characterization using advanced analytical instrumentation in evaluation of material chemical, physical, microstructure, surface morphology, thermal and mechanical properties (DSC, TGA, INSTRON, SEM, AFM etc.), relevant separation chromatography (GC, LC, IC and GPC), and spectroscopic areas (GC/MS, LC/MSMS, ICPMS, FTIR, XRF, and UV/VIS). Extensive hands-on experiences using advanced analytical instruments to perform food/beverage packaging material characterization to support business are required.
Ability to analyze data from multiple sources (design, packaging material property, polymer processing additives and packaging performance), analyze complex statistical data and DOE results.
Ability to acquire, establish, and apply new capabilities; and the desire and ability to collaborate and communicate with across functions as well as with external entities are essential to this position.
Demonstrated knowledge and application of Good Laboratory Practices, Lab informatics, and Quality Management systems.
Ability to convey information and ideas in a clear, meaningful, and timely manner; providing information to ensure understanding; solicits input from the project teams, suppliers and business partners. Generates reports and delivers presentations to key stakeholders, and cross-functional teams from SRA, Legal, Quality, FM/CPS, OU Technical and Global R&D. In addition, ability to apply the Company policy to respond to product/packaging scientific or regulatory issues. Includes the ability to handle sensitive and complex contacts that require a high level of judgment, tact and diplomacy to minimize negative impact to the System and Industry.
