Discoveries generated by Temple researchers span Temple’s 17 schools and colleges, resulting in a diverse intellectual property portfolio that is reaching significant commercial milestones and delivering new solutions for societal benefit. The Innovation Manager will fill a critical role for the Office of Technology Commercialization and Business Development by working directly with Temple researchers to identify, protect and enable further development and commercialization of new discoveries from the Engineering, Physical and Computational Sciences. The Innovation Manager will actively solicit, evaluate, and manage new innovations by working directly with faculty, staff and students at the earliest stages of discovery. Primary responsibilities will include developing intellectual property protection and commercialization strategies in coordination with the licensing team, outside patent counsel, joint owners and potential corporate partners. Intellectual property management responsibilities will include working with outside counsel and inventors to coordinate Temple’s response to patent and other intellectual property actions. In support of the licensing team, the Innovation Manger will be involved in researching comparable licensing terms and other technology valuation data, drafting term sheets and license agreements, and preparing inter-institutional agreements for co-owned intellectual property. Dynamic WorkforceEssential functions:Actively identifies research programs of commercial interest and meets regularly with faculty and students to serve as a resource for patent and commercialization issues; advises inventors of procedures required to protect, develop, and commercialize their inventions. Assists with the protection of inventions in assigned areas by working with faculty to identify and evaluate the patent and commercial potential of an invention. This includes performing patent and literature searches, working with outside patent counsel for opinions, fulfilling the requirements of the patent and copyright process. Assists with the development of marketing and licensing strategies for University-owned inventions. This includes researching commercial applications, analyzing markets and coordinating contacts with potential licensees, and developing documentation designed to: (1) acquaint potential licensees and entrepreneurs with the University-owned invention portfolio; and, (2) provide detailed technical information and potential commercial value of each individual invention. Researches terms and assists with the drafting of option, license and other related agreements with established and startup companies under direction of the AD. Provides guidance on intellectual property matters in collaboration with the contract function of the office (e.g. CDAs, MTAs, Collaboration Agreements). Assists with external communications to attract licensees and entrepreneurs. Assist with the coordination of technology submissions and team organization related to Temple University’s accelerator and technology development programs. Represents Temple University at relevant meetings and conferences. Identifies technologies for technology development funding opportunities. Works with external legal counsel for intellectual property protection matters under the direction of the AD. Develops and participates in educational programs (e.g. workshops) to increase internal and external awareness of the invention disclosure, protection and commercialization process. Assist with office data entry and reporting requirements for the US Government’s iEdison invention disclosure reporting system. Performs other related duties as assigned.Required Education & Experience:
Master’s degree in Bioengineering, other Engineering or Physical Sciences. Two years of experience working in academic technology transfer office. Direct experience in intellectual property management, market research, technical analysis, technical writing, and business development in university technology transfer environment. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Required Skills & Abilities:
*Demonstrated ability to comprehend technical details of new technologies and determine the appropriate intellectual property and commercialization strategy.
*Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills required to resolve issues associated with inventions.
*Excellent decision-making skills, including the ability to make informed decisions based on organization policies and standards for commercialization of inventions.
*Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to compose business correspondence and marketing materials, and the ability to effectively communicate scientific concepts to a lay audience.
*Task-, detail- and objective-oriented self-starter, along with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple deadline assignment schedules for a large portfolio of technologies and complex subject matter.
*Demonstrated interpersonal, collaborative and presentation skills, along with the ability to interact effectively in an academic and corporate setting with diverse groups of inventors, attorneys, investors, and industry executives.
*Strong team player with a positive, customer-service attitude
*Must be able and willing to travel to off-site meetings.Preferred:
