The Swarthmore College Peace Collection is the most extensive research library and archives in the United States focusing solely on movements for peace around the world. The Peace Collection is an internationally known special library and archives documenting non-governmental efforts for nonviolent social change with a focus on women’s contributions to these movements.
The opportunity:
Swarthmore College seeks an experienced archivist and manager to shape the future of the Peace Collection. The Curator is a long-standing and endowed role which provides leadership for the Peace Collection in collection stewardship, donor relations, collection development, researcher services, and outreach. The successful candidate should bring enthusiasm and creativity to the challenges of managing a large collection of approximately 15,000 linear feet of manuscripts, photographs, posters, audiovisual items, and ephemera, including approximately 25% stored off-site; as well as books, periodicals, and digital assets. This position presents a unique opportunity for a candidate with vision to build a staffing team and to create new, forward-thinking practices, policies and procedures.
The Curator of the Peace Collection reports directly to the Director of Libraries & College Librarian, and is part of the leadership team for Special Collections, which also includes the Friends Historical Library, College Archives, and Rare Book Room. The Curator collaborates with Special Collections colleagues to set common policies and practices and to determine the overall direction and future leadership for Special Collections. The Curator also works with colleagues library-wide on areas of mutual interest including space and facilities planning, and with faculty in Swarthmore’s Department of Peace & Conflict Studies.
