Stony Brook University Hiring for Licensed Practical Nurse – Per Diem at Stony Brook, NY  Full Time

Required Qualifications: As per Civil Service Guidelines. Must have taken and passed the specific job related Civil Service exam and be reachable on the appropriate Civil Service list. Must be eligible for or possession of a license and current registration as a Licensed Practical Nurse in New York State.

Preferred Qualifications: One year of healthcare experience working with an adult or aging population in a clinical setting. One year of long term care experience. Experience using EMR.

Brief Description of Duties: At Student Health Services our Licensed Practical Nurse is a critical member of our team who diagnose and treat responses to actual or potential health problems by means of nursing methods and techniques such as case finding, health teaching and counseling. Incumbents provide care supportive to and restorative of health and well-being, while adhering to a medical regimen. Under supervision of the Nurse Manager and in collaboration with other team members, provides direct and indirect patient care in accordance with the professional standards of care, state regulations and accreditation standards and SHS philosophy, policies, and procedures.

Duties of a Licensed Practical Nurse may include the following but are not limited to:

• Provides and ensures nursing care to the students at Stony Brook University within the framework of the medical and nursing care plan, the policies of Student Health Services, under the supervision of a professional nurse. Interviews patient about current problems, medications, and allergies and reviews medical record for pertinent previous and current information
• Monitors the students closely to identify response to treatments, medication and/or changes in health status. Provides treatments to the students according to the medical and nursing care plan and consistent with the policies of the Department.
• Prepares and dispenses medication to the students according to the medical plan of care and consistent with the policies of the Department.Participates in patient treatment regimen, including administering medications (under the supervision of a physician and registered nurse).
• Maintains policies and procedures relevant to medications including management of controlled substances.
• Communicates to supervisor, nursing staff and other departments and disciplines all pertinent information and changes impacting student care.
• Listens and responds appropriately to concerns or issues expressed by students and families.
• Works closely with other professional and disciplines to ensure timely and coordinated care.
• Participates in and serves on committees pertinent to the quality of care of the students.
• Participates in the orientation of new employees to the nursing unit and the clinical in-service of non-professional staff.
• Maintains adequate inventory of examination room supplies and prepares exam rooms at the beginning and end of day and between each patient contact.
• Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission

Special Notes: These are temporary, hourly, per diem positions, shift and pass days varied. Weekend work may be required. FLSA Nonexempt positions, eligible for overtime provisions of the FLSA. Mandatory rehire roster candidates have preference.
