The Advanced Software Engineer is responsible for the design, documentation, development, and testing of software solutions for new and existing medical devices. The Advanced Software Engineer is also responsible for analyzing product system-level requirements and translating them into software specifications as well as the development and delivery of specific software features and functionality. This position works independently and within a cross functional team with minimal supervision.
1. Collaborates with cross functional team members for project planning, analysis, and development of product requirements and to outline proposed solutions. Develops time and effort estimates for assigned features and functions for self and less experienced engineers. Makes delivery commitments. (10%)
2. Leads the development of software architecture and software requirements based on the user requirements and system requirements. (10%)
3. Designs, implements, and maintains efficient, reusable, and reliable software code according to corporate standards and procedures for new and sustaining engineering projects, maintaining code quality, organization, and automation. (45%)
4. Creates software development process documentation, including requirements, design and interface specifications and verification documentation. (10%)
5. Leads unit, integration, and system testing effort, including capacity / performance testing of applications as required. (15%)
6. Identifies bottlenecks and software anomalies and devises solutions to these problems. Reviews and resolves software change requests and software defects. (10%)
1. Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Engineering, Software Engineering or Electrical Engineering required with 8 or more years of related engineering experience OR Master’s Degree in above noted fields with 7 or more years of related engineering experience. A degree in another Engineering discipline may be acceptable with proven software education and/or training and 8 or more years of demonstrated software experience. Advanced degree is desirable.
2. Strong written and verbal communication skills and strong problem-solving skills are required. (8 or more years)
3. Capable of solving engineering problems through accurate interpretation of requirements and test results. (5 or more years)
4. Exceptional team player with some leadership experience. (5 or more years)
5. Proven experience at software development analysis, task time and effort estimation and execution to plan. (6 or more years)
6. Experience performing software requirement analysis and definition. Experience working with stakeholders to refine product requirements to be realized in software is desired. (6 or more years)
7. Experience in the implementation of infrastructure and applications for Manufacturing, Installation, and Serviceability is desirable. (5 or more years)
8. Practical experience in C and C++, object-oriented analysis and programming, and multi-threaded/multi-tasking programming is required. Understanding of development for a resource-constrained target environment with specific performance requirements is desired. (5 or more years)
9. Practical experience with Ruby on Rails is highly desired. (1 or more years)
10. Experience with one or more RTOS systems and the associated system services is required. (5 or more years)
11. Experience with serial communication (UART, USART, SPI, I2C, CAN, USB) is required. (5 or more years)
12. Experience developing or maintaining device driver software on an embedded system is required. (4 or more years)
13. Experience in User Interface (UI)/Human Machine Interface (HMI) development is required, which may include HMI touch screens or Graphical UIs. Understanding of usability / human factors is desired. (5 or more years)
14. Experience with Python and JavaScript is desired. (2 or more years)
15. Experience with Ethernet and network protocols is desired. (2 or more years)
16. Software quality assurance to include unit and integration test development and execution, code inspection and reviews. (5 or more years)
17. Understanding of software cybersecurity threats in systems and best practices to detect and repel attacks
18. Experience using software integrated development environments (IDEs) and tools, including configuration management (version control), defect management, continuous integration and code analysis tools is desired. (5 or more years)
19. Experience working in a regulated industry which requires formalized software development processes and software risk management is required. Medical device industry experience is desired. (3 or more years)
20. Experience working in a stage-gate development environment is desired. (3 or more years)
21. Travel up to 5% (may include international travel).
