The Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education (VPUE) is seeking a Deputy Director for the Haas Center for Public Service. This senior leadership position will play a critical role in advancing the Center’s work of connecting academic study with community and public service to strengthen communities and develop effective public leaders. The Deputy Director will support the advancement of community engaged learning and research at Stanford, and will play a critical role at the Haas Center in promoting cohesiveness and collaboration amongst programs, guiding program evolution, and incubating new strategic initiatives. This position will also support center-wide work developing new campus and community partnerships that touch multiple programs.
In this role, you will:
Provide leadership direction for Haas Center programs:
– Provide direct supervision for two Associate Directors, each overseeing multiple programs across curricular and co-curricular domains
– Provide direct supervision for two Senior Program Directors of Campus Partnerships and Community Partnerships
– Convene and facilitate regular meetings and communication streams across programs and teams to identify, clarify, and resolve program challenges
– Engage and promote cohesiveness amongst Haas programs and campus and community partnerships that touch multiple university and external programs
– Serve as a representative of the Haas Center with both internal and external audiences while exercising considerable judgment in articulating an ambitious vision, viewpoints and agendas on behalf of the Haas Center.
– Serve as a thought leader; contribute to visibility of the Haas Center at national meetings, and bring insights and new developments from the field to inform program development
Provide leadership in developing and operationalizing strategic plans:
– Lead program teams in defining specific annual plans that advance strategic priorities.
– Lead and facilitate the development and implementation of program assessment frameworks; coordinate with center and university resources on data collection and analysis
– Build and maintain key internal and external program partnerships, including managing the Haas Center Faculty Steering Committee, an advisory committee involving 30+ faculty who guide the center’s strategic direction.
– Develop and launch strategic initiatives and special projects; incubate and determine ways to integrate into Haas Center structure if appropriate. Examples of ongoing initiatives include a collaboration with ORSL to develop new student trainings on effective activism, and the Scholars in Service program in partnership with Stanford Impact Labs.
Lead development of practices and policies for programs; support strategic resource development and allocation:
– Interpret, implement and ensure compliance with university, academic and administrative policies within an organization or program. Recommend new internal policies, guidelines and procedures to manage risk and compliance.
– Develop and implement strategic and tactical plans for the growth and improvement of Haas Center programs and activities
– Allocate staff and budget resources to achieve desired program and strategic goals.
– Coordinate year-end reports and funding requests to campus units and external donors that support key program areas.
– Lead program staff in managing, developing, and forecasting program budgets in alignment with the strategic priorities of the center
– Support Director of Finance and Administration and Executive Director in long-range financial planning by identifying key program budget needs and priorities
– Partnering with the executive Director and Director of Development to develop and steward funding and gift sources
– Frequently stand/walk, sitting, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, perform desk-based computer tasks. Occasionally use a telephone, writing by hand, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 40 pounds. Rarely sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh >40 pounds. To be successful in this role, you will bring:
● Advanced degree or combination of relevant education, training, and/or experience.
● Five or more years of relevant experience to community engagement in a higher education context
● Five or more years experience managing staff
● Demonstrated experience managing a budget and developing financial plans
● Demonstrated experience in community partnership-building
● Demonstrated experience in program development and implementation
● Demonstrated experience in cultivating funding sources
● Strong interpersonal skills to effectively lead, motivate, and influence others
● Excellent oral, written, and analytical skills, exhibiting fluency in area of specialization
In addition, preferred requirements include:
● Demonstrated experience in building strategic partnerships at Stanford University; established networks/connections at Stanford University
● Established networks/connections with community partners in region surrounding Stanford
● Scholarly and professional accomplishments in a relevant field, indicating an ability to work as a peer with university faculty
● Demonstrated experience across both co-curricular and curricular programs advancing community engaged learning and research

The expected pay range for this position is $154,000 to $180,000 per annum. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
