Laboratory/Instrument Coordinator
Position Summary:
The Laboratory and Instrument Coordinator provides support for Chemistry teaching laboratories, laboratory research and laboratory-based curricular endeavors; develops and implements procedures and policies for an effective laboratory support system; and maintains and operates the department’s growing inventory of instruments.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities :
During the summer the Laboratory/Instrument Coordinator will:
DIMENSIONSThis position has the indirect accountability of the Operating Budget of ~$75,000 (supplies and instrument maintenance) and the Payroll Budget of $5,000 (hiring teaching assistants).Required Qualifications:
Master’s degree in Chemistry or a related field and two years of related experience required.
The candidate/incumbent must have a broad-base knowledge of instrumentation such as NMR, UV-VIS, FTIR, HPLC, LCMS, GCMS; chemical solutions preparation, storage and chemical waste management. Additionally, must be able to work under time constraints and work with a diverse population. Experience teaching laboratories, supervising students, teaching assistants is a plus.Good oral and written communication skills are required when interacting with faculty, teaching assistants, and work-study students. Incumbent must have excellent interpersonal, organizational skills; and the ability to handle situations with diplomacy.To perform this job successfully, an individual must have excellent writing skills with the ability to prepare laboratory materials and reports. The incumbent must have the ability to effectively present information in groups and one-on-one. This position requires the ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, and the ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. The work of this position requires intermediate skills using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point). Incumbent may be required to process basic letters, memos, e-mails, and formal business correspondence; handle such things as mail merges, flyers, spreadsheets containing formulas, creating forms, creating brochures, tables, and newsletters. In addition, the individual should have knowledge of chemical drawing software.

Master’s degree in Chemistry/Biochemistry/Organic preferred

Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to: sit, stand, walk, talk, reach with hands and arms; and use hands to prepare experiments, handle lab equipment, and to operate computer. The employee is frequently required to: smell. The employee is occasionally required to: climb or balance, and lift and/or move up to 15 pounds. Specific vision requirements for this job include the ability to adjust focus as necessary.
