Illinois Residency Requirement: This position requires Illinois residency within 180 calendar days of the start date.
The Art and Design Department is accepting applications to fulfill the role of Craft Shop Coordinator to provide supervision and maintenance of the Art and Design woodshop equipment, to aid in the maintenance and repair of equipment in other art studios, to train and certify students in the safe use of woodshop equipment, to oversee graduate assistants in the wood shop, and to be responsive to the campus safety officer, the department safety committee members, and the department chair.
Responsibilities and Duties:
-Teach users how to safely and effectively use equipment including certification training of students for use of wood shop equipment. This includes creating instruction manuals for proper use that are accessible to all users, aiding in set up of equipment, and training users on proper and safe use of equipment. Instruction may be given to individuals or groups. Groups may include students, faculty, and staff.
-Maintain and repair teaching and studio equipment, including, but not limited to equipment in the wood shop and the following studios: sculpture, ceramics, metalsmithing, printmaking, photography, textiles, painting, and drawing.
-Research best practices for use of current equipment to maximize functionality, increase classroom application, and limit user risk. Obtain quotes for repairing various equipment used in the wood shop and art studios. Evaluate data to determine if equipment is worth repairing. Research and consult on new equipment purchases.
-Maintain hours in wood shop to help walk-ins who are certified in their wood shop safety training.

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications:
1. Any one or any combination totaling three (3) years (36 months) from the following categories:
A. College course work in art, design, industrial education, or a closely related field as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:
-30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months)
-Associate’s Degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen months (18 months)
-90 semester hours equals two (2) years (24 months)
-Bachelor’s Degree (120 semester hours) equals three (3) years (36 months)
B. Progressively more responsible work experience in art, craft, and woodshop operations, including one (1) year (12 months) in the instruction of these operations.
C. Two (2) years (24 months) of work experience assisting in the promotion, design, development, instructing, and management of art, craft, and woodshop programs.
Preferred Qualifications:
A master’s degree in a relevant field and a minimum of three years experience repairing studio equipment.
Considerable experience in solving problems with technological equipment. Familiarity with sources of information and parts for repair of equipment. Ability to improvise repairs of equipment for which repair parts and information are no longer available, or to find alternative ways of accomplishing its function.
An ideal candidate will possess understanding of the theoretical and practical aspects of the application of studio equipment, and the ability to convey the understanding, when necessary, to its users. Since all of the work of the position involves coordination with equipment users, strong verbal communication skills, both oral and written, are important.
