DESCRIPTION:
The Student Retention and Completion Specialist works closely with members of the academic community to develop and implement creative, efficient, and effective student retention and completion initiatives. This position will provide a comprehensive and culturally sensitive set of student support services designed to ensure the academic success of students as measured by increased retention and graduation rates.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Accountable for the enrollment, retention, and completion of students identified in designated populations.
2. Develops, implements, and assesses creative methodologies that ensures student success as defined by the increased completion and retention of students.
3. Implements pro-active strategies and college-wide initiatives that foster student completion of their identified program of study.
4. Participates on the College-Wide Performance Funding Committee in leadership strategies that ensure student achievement of their academic goals.
5. Pro-actively provides academic advisement services to students, assisting them in planning their educational goals, reviewing the programs of study and their respective requirements, selecting appropriate course work, and reviewing graduation requirements.
6. Analyzes and interprets various departmental or functional requirements for students in order to teach self-reliance in re-enrollment processes in subsequent terms.
7. Makes appropriate referrals to campus offices for meetings with academic departments, tutoring services, counseling, services for students with disabilities, veterans affairs, career development, and other support services.
8. Accesses, enters, and retrieves data from the system such as admissions application, placement test scores from official transcripts (SAT, ACT), financial aid information, documentation and staff comments, college transcript information recorded in scanning software and the PeopleSoft platform.
9. Works in collaboration with all members of the academic community to promote individual student success.
10. Supports students in the positive resolution of challenges and barriers that impede their success.
11. Performs other duties as may be required or assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Bachelor’s degree from a regionally or nationally accredited institution.
2. One year of experience working with students in a high school or postsecondary institution.
3. Experience using Microsoft Office Suite including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Master’s degree from a regionally or nationally accredited institution.
2. Knowledge of career and technical education programs.
3. Experience in the retention and completion of students in a college or university setting.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
1. Knowledge of enterprise-wide student information systems.
2. Strong service excellence skills.
3. Excellent problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
4. Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
5. Excellent Microsoft Office skills (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and ability to access, input, retrieve, and interpret data from a computer and provide reports.
6. Ability to work well in a highly collaborative and team-oriented environment.
7. Ability to work in a flexible and fast paced environment, exercising good judgment and discretion without close supervision.
8. Ability to use multiple modes of contact to serve the needs of students including face-to-face interaction, electronic interaction, and interaction via telephone.
9. Committed to working in a multicultural environment.
10. Ability to exhibit a professional, courteous demeanor.
WORK ENVIRONMENT and SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS:
1. Works in an office environment.
2. May be required to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends.
3. May be required to travel to and from college campuses and other local destinations.
