Tenure Track
Job Description:
Sarah Lawrence College invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position in Japanese to begin in Fall 2024. Candidates should be prepared to teach Japanese language at all levels, as well as to teach courses in English in their area(s) of interest. While the area of specialization is open, we especially encourage candidates whose own work focuses on 20th or 21st c. Japanese literature and/or film/visual culture. We are interested in candidates who have creative and expansive visions about teaching and research and who incorporate multidisciplinary and comparative approaches in both their teaching and their scholarly work.
The application should include the following: cover letter; curriculum vitae; statement of teaching philosophy, including consideration of pedagogical and curricular inclusivity; evidence of teaching effectiveness (e.g., teaching evaluations); two sample syllabi for courses that the candidate might offer at Sarah Lawrence (one a language class at any level and the other a course taught in English); a brief writing sample; and three letters of recommendation. We encourage candidates to learn more about the philosophy of education and pedagogical approach that makes Sarah Lawrence distinctive, and to indicate both in their letters and in their syllabi how they might envision working in this format.
Review of applications will begin on September 15, 2023, and will continue until a successful candidate is chosen. Should the review of your qualifications result in a decision to pursue your candidacy, you will be contacted by email. Native or near-native fluency in both Japanese and English is essential, as is a commitment to excellence in teaching.
Our best estimate of the salary range for this position is $70 – 85K.
Required Qualifications:
Applicants should have received their PhD by Fall 2024.
