Job no: 526853
Work type: Staff
Location: San Diego
Categories: Unit 9 – CSUEU – Technical Support Services, Probationary, Full Time, Student Services, On-site (work in-person at business location)
Position Summary
The Instructional Support Technician III performs the service of a Marine Collector by providing support services in the Department’s teaching and research programs requiring the use of living or dead marine organisms. The position is responsible for maintaining a valid scientific collecting permit (including submitting applications for new permits or renewals and reporting efforts), collecting, maintaining, and delivering live marine specimens to appropriate laboratory sections and retrieving them after use; for compiling and researching information regarding taxonomy, collection dates, sites, and abundances of marine invertebrates; for advising faculty and students on the location, abundance, collection, transportation, and maintenance of marine species; overseeing the use, maintenance and repair of scientific and technical equipment associated with marine collection; and lead of a Graduate Assistant who assists with some of the above duties.
The organisms are provided mainly by collecting in local intertidal and subtidal habitats or by acquisition from off-campus sources. The Instructional Support Technician III maintains equipment in the marine instructional laboratory (SLS 343). Aquaria and associated equipment used to maintain living organisms are provided 24-hour care and maintenance, and equipment used in collecting, holding, and rearing marine organisms are also maintained. The collection schedule may be extremely demanding and difficult, depending upon the nature of the collection requests, the difficulty in obtaining the live materials, the early morning, late night, or weekend low tides, and the planning and coordination of delivery of specimens for as many as 19 different laboratory sections (over 9 different laboratory numbers) and numerous faculty members. The Instructional Support Technician III maintains accurate records of dates, locations and abundances of species collected.
This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position. This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation.
Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs. Collection schedules may be dictated by the need to work with changing tide and weather conditions, and may necessitate weekend, early morning, or nighttime collecting trips. Scheduling will also require planning and coordination with faculty members to support delivery of specimens for multiple laboratory sections across multiple laboratory courses.
The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.
