The Position:
Applications are being accepted for a 12-month Assistant Professor, DSPS Counselor position under the direction of the Vice President of Student Services at San Diego City College.
Major Responsibilities:
Provide academic, career, personal and disability management counseling to students with disabilities.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the initial intake interview, collection and analysis of verification of disability documentations to determine eligibility for services; develop student authorized accommodation plan, individual counseling, group presentations, instruction;
Authorization of academic accommodations required by the ADA, Section 504, Section 508 and other federal laws
Liaison and coordination for students with college community and outside agencies;
Program/department planning, project implementation and follow-up;
Prepare written reports, maintain accurate documentation of all services and contacts, and maintain confidential student records in compliance with state and federal requirements;
Provide disability awareness training and consultation to college faculty and classified professionals;
Work collaboratively with other college staff, faculty, administration, community agencies and other education institutions;
Participate in college and division governance assignments and other departmental responsibilities as required;
Participate in the development and revision of curriculum, program evaluation, and assessment of student learning outcomes;
Maintain current knowledge in the subject-matter area and effective teaching/learning strategies;
Use a wide range of delivery systems, such as lecture, lecture/lab, hybrid, or individualized instruction, and other alternatives;
Evaluate and revise course outlines, course materials, and instructional methods;
Perform other duties in the DSPS Department related to student access & success.
Qualifications:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants for this position must show evidence of the following minimum qualifications:
1. Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in Rehabilitation Counseling; OR,
2. Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in Special Education, and twenty four or more semester units in upper division or graduate level course work in counseling, guidance, student personnel, psychology, or social work; OR,
3. Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in Counseling, Guidance, Student Personnel, Psychology, Career Development, or Social Welfare; AND, either twelve or more semester units in upper division or graduate level coursework specifically in counseling or rehabilitation of individuals with disabilities, or two years of full-time experience, or the equivalent, in one or more of the following: (A) Counseling or guidance for students with disabilities; OR, (B) Counseling and/or guidance in industry, government, public agencies, military or private social welfare organizations in which the responsibilities of the position were predominantly or exclusively for persons with disabilities; OR,
4. Possession of a California Community College Credential as a Disability Support Programs and Services Counselor (valid for life); AND,
5. Completion of California Community College Chancellor’s Office “Learning Disabilities Eligibility Model Training” OR fifteen semester units of upper division or graduate study in the area of learning disabilities; AND,
6. Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
Foreign Degrees: Applicants with foreign degrees from colleges or universities outside of the United States must have their coursework evaluated by a professional association. A copy of the evaluation must be submitted with the application packet.

Knowledge of and experience in working with community agencies and resources related to supporting people with disabilities.
Thorough knowledge of educational limitations and appropriate accommodations related to a wide variety of disabilities.
Effective written and interpersonal communication skills.
Evidence of ability to synthesize diverse information, make timely decisions and implement chosen course of action.
Ability to problem-solve, engage in the interactive process and serve as an advocate for equal access for adults with disabilities.
Experience in the use of computer technology and adaptive computer technology for counseling and teaching activities and data tracking.
Willingness to participate effectively in shared governance.
Vision and energy to plan and implement innovative programs to enhance student success.
Desirable Competencies that may be considered:
Learning Disability Certification and experience in Learning Disability Testing. OR
Fluent in American Sign Language
Licenses:
Pay Information:
Class 1, Step C – Class 6, Step C ($6,652.70– $8,490.72) per month based on the current AFT – College Faculty Tenured-Tenure Track Monthly Salary Schedule.
Initial salary placement for this Assistant Professor is commensurate with required education and related teaching experience as outlined in section A2.1 of the AFT Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement. Step C is the maximum step placement for a new hire, and this is non-negotiable at this time.
The District offers a comprehensive fringe benefit package including employer paid medical, dental, vision plans, sick leave, and opportunities for professional development. This position is FLSA Exempt and may not accrue overtime. Benefits will be provided under the terms of the AFT-Guild, Local 1931 – Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement. Annual Salaries will be recalculated for service less than a full academic year based on Education Code §87815, any required adjustment will be made within the first pay period. Travel reimbursement for interviewees traveling more than 200 miles, one-way, may be paid according to geographic location (see SDCCD Travel Stipend Policy, Rev 7/14/2011). Typically, Assistant Professors earn tenure after 4 years and promote to Associate Professor.
