Detailed Job Description
RIT’s College of Engineering Technology (CET) seeks to expand and enhance its small and growing team of engineering education researchers in our first-year programs. We invite applications from exceptional candidates for a full-time Assistant Professor position in the CET Exploration Program. We are seeking an innovative, enthusiastic, and collaborative individual to contribute to our vibrant and growing community of education researchers. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated portfolio of education research, the ability to secure education research funding, and a passion for fostering academic success in the next generation of engineers, innovators, and applied scientists.
Candidates for this position will maintain a workload portfolio of approximately 60% engineering education research, 30% teaching, and 10% service. We seek candidates with a strong potential to conduct qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods research and secure external funding in one or more prominent areas of engineering education research. The teaching expectations for this role will focus on undergraduate student success and help lead the development of a common, multidisciplinary, experiential curriculum for all first-year students in CET. We seek candidates with teaching expertise that includes one or more of the following areas related to the mechanical or civil engineering disciplines: first-year engineering experiences, applied mathematics and statistics, application of artificial intelligence and machine learning, mechanics, PLC programming, statics and dynamics, thermodynamics, machines, motors, structural design, highway and transportation engineering, water and wastewater resources, hydrology, geotechnical engineering, construction engineering, or other relevant areas. Successful candidates will have demonstrated the ability to conduct engineering education research, and expertise to teach advanced courses in mechanical, robotics and manufacturing, civil, environmental, packaging & printing, or other relevant areas.
Responsibilities will include engineering education research, teaching, program development, and service. Enthusiasm for contributing to a collaborative environment of research and teaching that fosters first-year student success is essential. The successful candidate will be required to secure external funding to conduct research relevant to engineering education and disseminate outcomes in journals and at peer-reviewed conferences. Teaching responsibilities include course and laboratory development and delivery via classroom, online, or blended formats. Program development will include helping create and define a vision for a common first-year experience across the nine undergraduate majors in CET and incorporating KEEN-focused student learning outcomes into foundational courses. Service will include contributions to the operation of the department, college, and university, and maintaining a clear professional development agenda that supports the growth of the candidate and academic department. Engagement with professional societies in engineering education and the KEEN network is expected.
The Assistant Professor Position begins on August 15, 2024. A Ph.D. in engineering education or STEM education, with an MS in a relevant engineering field or a Ph.D. in engineering is required as well as some professional experience in an engineering field.
We are seeking an individual with the ability and interest to contribute to a community committed to student-centeredness; professional development and scholarship; integrity and ethics; respect, diversity and pluralism; innovation and flexibility; and teamwork and collaboration.
