SUMMARY
Teaches a full-time load of middle school students in the humanities including history, English (grammar, literature, poetry, and writing), philosophy, religion, politics, culture, geography, art, and music). Essentially, the study and teaching of what it means to be human through a Christian worldview. Teaches rhetorical skills helping students to form and defend positions through their writing, speaking, presentations, and class discussions. Facilitates the student’s exploration of themes like power and authority, love, justice and injustice, and the proper virtuous, Christian response. One section of Humanities constitutes two consecutive class periods. This position is for a long-term guest teacher, with the possibility of becoming a permanent position.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Grammar, writing and rhetoric activities must be used effectively within all content areas.
6th grade explores the Truth Seeker and the Courageous Christian in the Middle Ages through the Reformation.
European emphasis
Books studied: Crispin and the Cross of Lead, Crispin at the Edge of the World, King’s Fifth, Twelfth Night, Shakespeare’s Scribe, John Calvin; I, Juan de Pareja, Courage and Conviction
7th grade examines the Courageous Christian, Truth Seeker, and Servant Leader as humankind struggles with the evolution of Power and Authority from the 17th century Church to the Crown to the spirit of Revolution in the 18th century.
