The New Jersey project at the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs seeks a collaborative policy professional with experience in NJ public policy. The Associate will be responsible for research, analysis, outreach, communications, and strategic support to advance the mission and objectives of SPIA in NJ. The Policy Associate will report to the director and work closely with faculty affiliates, advisory board members, students, staff, non-resident fellows, and partners statewide to conceptualize, realize, and support work that addresses priorities bearing on the wellbeing of New Jersey’s most vulnerable residents. Responsibilities will include conceiving of, coordinating, and attending meetings; preparing policy briefs and research summaries; and communicating with a wide range of stakeholders. This position entails both creative and supportive roles: helping to devise and sustain work within Princeton University and with collaborators – in academia, government, and non-profit partners — statewide that are central to SPIA in NJ. Candidates with an existing network of relationships and a working knowledge of the landscape of public policy in the state will be given extra consideration. A graduate/advanced degree in a related field or equivalent experience in a community context is required. Candidates should have a track record of research and writing with a social science, humanities, racial and/or economic justice focus, and a thorough understanding of how existing power structures have produced varying access to opportunity. Applicants should have an appreciation of the current landscape of public policy in New Jersey, be conversant with social science research and comfortable interacting with scholars working in a range of fields such as housing, climate, education, healthcare, civil rights, transportation and infrastructure, environmental justice, racial justice, immigrant rights, economic justice, and the criminal legal arena. The person in this role will be responsible for tracking state and local policy and regulatory proceedings to proactively identify strategic opportunities for SPIA in NJ to engage. The Associate will liaise with Princeton’s Office of Government Affairs (Washington, D.C.), Office of State Affairs, SPIA’s Office of Public Affairs and Communications, the Program for Community Engaged Scholarship, and other entities in the PU orbit. Sample Duties and Responsibilities: *Work closely with the director and fellows to identify research areas and design research projects that contribute to advancing SPIA in NJ’s mission and objectives. *Conduct project/policy research including analyzing data, conducting interviews, and synthesizing information from a variety of sources. *Produce high-quality reports, articles, and policy briefs based on research findings, and present findings to diverse audiences, including policymakers, academics, and practitioners. *Contribute to the development of new research proposals and design of panel discussions and roundtables. *Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant policy issues and trends related to strategic priorities in key policy domains. *Contribute to writing news bulletins for SPIA in NJ. *Coordinate and attend seminars, workshops, and other events, and actively participate in SPIA in NJ discussions and debates on Princeton’s campus and off. Supervision: The Full-Time Specialist will report to the director of SPIA in NJ and work closely with other fellows, faculty, and staff.
