The Outreach Counselor is responsible for providing direct short-term counseling and crisis intervention services to students, consultation to staff and administrators including coaches in Athletics, and coordinated evidence-based mental health promotion programming (e.g., skills-building workshops) in partnership with staff and student groups in satellite offices outside of the McCosh Health Center. The satellite offices will be in an Athletics student space and a graduate student residential space, subject to change based on student needs. The counselor will be responsible for establishing an office in those locations, integrating with the student community in those locations, and working closely with staff both at the site and with other offices that have well-being-related functions. The counselor will be expected to work 1-2 evenings weekly, providing clinical services and/or outreach to students in that time.
The ideal candidate for this position will show specialized expertise in working with student athletes, with specific knowledge about issues pertaining to sports psychology and experience in supporting students in highly competitive academic and athletic environments. Ideally, the candidate will also bring awareness of the unique challenges for graduate and/or international students and prior experience in supporting those populations. The counselor will also have a significant campus prevention, outreach, and training background, and, in addition to licensure as a clinician, it is preferred that they will hold an advanced degree in public health or the equivalent credential to support their population-based educational work.
The counselor will be adept at establishing solid collaborative relationships with staff and administrators within UHS and from other units, as they will serve as a consultative resource to those campus partners (e.g., providing guidance to coaches around mental health and student support, etc.). The particular skill and knowledge set will also be informed by a strong understanding of the developmental and mental health challenges affecting late adolescents and young adults.
