This is a newly created, 2-year, term position to support the Human Remains Oversight Board (HROB) and the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) Committee.
This position will coordinate and facilitate communications between the Human Remains Oversight Board, the NAGPRA committee, faculty, researchers, students, outside experts, consultants, the Art Museum and other stakeholders both on-and-off campus. The position is responsible for gathering and cataloging highly sensitive data related to human remains collections and uses of human remains by Princeton University faculty, students, and staff; researching existing collections to clarify their origins and the means by which they came to Princeton University; proposing repatriation or disposition when appropriate; managing external consultants; facilitating communication and consultation with descendant communities and individuals; stewarding appropriate care for material on campus and repatriation of material to source communities; serving as a source of knowledge and as a community liaison regarding Indigenous belongings; gathering institutional documents; and conducting/coordinating research regarding institutional history. This position will also provide training on relevant and contextual laws, regulations, and policies related to the use of human remains including how to respectfully and ethically use and study them.
Responsibilities
Research and Record Development:
– Build and maintain database(s) and other digital resources pertaining to collections of human remains at Princeton University
– Conduct (non-physical) research on human remains; how they came to Princeton, their origins, etc., maintain any/all records associated with individual and collections of human remains
Program Coordination and Communications Liaison:
– Review, summarize, and distribute to HROB and the NAGPRA committee information about how other institutions have addressed comparable collections
– Research and recommend interlocutors for any discussions of repatriation/disposition
– Manage communications with stakeholders on and off campus
– Receive applications for academic use of human remains from University faculty, students, and staff.
– Serve as a liaison between Princeton University’s HROB and NAGPRA committee regarding overlapping cases
– Assist the HROB and NAGPRA committee in the implementation of decisions, outcomes, or oversight
– Provide catalogue data and other resources to outside consultants regarding Native American human remains and belongings subject to repatriation or disposition
– Monitor and manage collection and dissemination of NAGPRA-related materials to University partners and outside collaborators
– Develop and implement an effective training program and provide training on related laws, regulations, and policies involving the use of human remains to students, researchers, and committee members.
– Exercise sound judgment, high morals, and maintain confidentiality when working with highly sensitive materials.
