The Papua New Guinea University of Technology (Unitech) is located in the industrial city of Lae, the second largest city in Papua New Guinea. The city of Lae has an airport with flights to all locations in PNG. Unitech has a main campus and three amalgamated colleges. The main campus has 14 academic departments including an Open and Distance Learning Department. It offers undergraduate and graduate programs in engineering, natural and applied sciences, built environment, language and business. The university has an Information Technology Services Department and a Library.
DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNICATION & DEVELOPMENT STUDIES
Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for the following position in the Department of Communication and Development Studies at the PNG University of Technology.
The Department offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs in Communication and Development Studies and it has an active applied research culture. It is now seeking to strengthen and consolidate its research, postgraduate and academic activities in all areas of communication and development studies. The Department is seeking qualified applicants for the following position:
Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor/Professor of Sociology/Social Sciences (1 position)
A doctoral degree in sociology (or a relevant social science) is required and the candidate will need to show strong evidence of research and a commitment to teaching both at the graduate (Masters and PhD) and undergraduate levels in at least one of the following development-oriented subjects: field research practice, research methodologies (quantitative preferred), national and community development (with focus on the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals), or social mapping.
Furthermore, the candidate needs to show a progressive trajectory of teaching and research achievement over time. Specifically, he or she must have at least five (5) years of teaching experience for a Senior Lecturer ranking, ten (10) years of teaching experience for an Associate Professor ranking, and fifteen (15) years of teaching experience in academic settings (or equivalent in other relevant professional activity) for a Professor ranking, as well as 50, 100 or 150 points in publication respectively for each rank, that is, have published about 5, 10 or 15 articles in internationally recognized journals conference proceedings, and/or books (or equivalent).
Finally, this is a key leadership position, so the candidate must also be able to perform effectively as a team leader, both at the Department (e.g., mentoring of junior staff) and, when required, University level (including the possibility of serving as Head of Department if requested by Senior Management). Appointment rank will be made appropriate to the candidate’s qualifications and university requirements.
Conditions of Service
Base Salary Range: Professor PGK93,956 – PGK114,835 per annum
Base IMA Range : PGK94,103 – PGK140,717 per annum
Base Salary Range: Associate Professor PGK76,904 – PGK93,993 per annum
Base IMA Range : PGK83,489 – PGK107,189 per annum
Base Salary Range: Senior Lecturer – PGK64,135 – PGK78,388 per annum
Base IMA Range : PGK76,200 – PGK92,729 per annum
IMA = International Market Allowance
(Level of appointment depends upon qualification and experience)
Initial contract period is for three years. Benefits include a gratuity of 30% of salary in the first year, 35% in the second year and 40% in the third year (paid on a fortnightly basis), support for approved research, appointment and repatriation fares for yourself and dependents, book & equipment allowance of PGK750.00 per annum, settling-in/out allowance of PGK1,700.00 for single & PGK3,600.00 for accompanied plus PGK200.00 for each of two authorized dependent children (under 19 years) on appointment and repatriation, six weeks paid leave per year, recreation leave fares for yourself, spouse & two authorized dependents after 18 months of service and education fares and assistance towards school fees for authorized dependents are available.
Staff members are also permitted to earn from consultancy up to 50% of earnings annually. Consultancy projects need to be approved by the respective Head of Department and the Vice Chancellor’s office. Furnished accommodation is provided on campus. All earnings in PNG attract income tax, the tax rates are progressive and the maximum rate is 40%.
