THE PAPUA NEW GUINEA UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY
The Papua New Guinea University of Technology (PNGUOT) is located in the industrial hub of Lae city, the second largest city in Papua New Guinea. The city of Lae is connected to all parts of PNG through roads, sea and air. The PNGUOT has a main campus and three amalgamated colleges. The main campus has 14 academic departments including an Open and Distance Learning Department. It offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs in engineering, natural and applied sciences, built environment, language and business. The university has an Information Technology Services Department and a Library.
Department of Mining Engineering
The Department of Mining Engineering is one of the four engineering departments at the PNG University of Technology and is very popular amongst prospective students both nationally and internationally particularly the Pacific Island nations of Solomon Islands and Vanuatu. The department offers Bachelor of Mining Engineering (Honors) and Bachelor of Mineral Processing Engineering (Honors) as well as 2-year master by research programs – Master of Philosophy in Mining and Master of Philosophy in Mineral Processing.
Vacancies exist in the department of Mining Engineering. Applicants must be highly qualified and dedicated individuals who shall promote the department and the University as the provider of quality and skilled professionals. The appointees will be responsible to the Head of the Department for academic and research leadership, and assist in the operation and administration of the department where necessary. They will perform instructional duties, including supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students and pursue research and appropriate consulting activities in order to maintain high professional standards within the discipline. They will also be required to make contributions to the department’s periodic curriculum review and development and the current accreditation process
Applications are invited for the following position:
Professor in Mining Engineering (x1)
The successful candidate will hold an undergraduate degree and a PhD in Mining Engineering or closely related field from a recognized university. The successful candidate should be a member of a professional engineering body, should have published a minimum of 15 papers in listed, peer reviewed journals and should have at least 15 years of university teaching experience or equivalent industrial research experience. Evidence of having guided postgraduate students at both master and PhD levels and a track record of attracting research funds from industry is highly desirable. The candidate should have demonstrated ability to guide and conduct collaborative research in multidisciplinary fields in Mining, Mineral Processing and Geology on industry-based problems is necessary.
The successful candidate for this position is expected to provide academic leadership to the Mining Engineering section. Familiarity with delivering lectures online using learning management systems such as Google Classroom or Moodle will be an added advantage.
Conditions of Service
Base Salary Range : Professor PGK95,366 – PGK116,558 per annum
Base IMA Range : PGK105,320 – PGK162,617 per annum
IMA = International Market Allowance
(Level of appointment depends upon qualification and experience)
Initial contract period is for three years. Benefits include a gratuity of 30% of salary in the first year, 35% in the second year and 40% in the third year (paid on a fortnightly basis), support for approved research, appointment and repatriation fares for yourself and dependents, book & equipment allowance of PGK750.00 per annum, settling-in/out allowance of PGK2,000.00 for single & PGK4,000.00 for accompanied plus PGK210.00 for each of two authorized dependent children (under 19 years) on appointment and repatriation, six weeks paid leave per year, recreation leave fares for yourself, spouse & two authorized dependents after 18 months of service and education fares and assistance towards school fees for authorized dependents are available. Staff members are also permitted to earn from consultancy up to 50% of earnings annually. Consultancy projects need to be approved by the respective Head of Department and the Vice Chancellor’s office. Furnished accommodation is provided on campus. All earnings in PNG attract income tax, the tax rates are progressive, and the maximum rate is 42%.
