Summary: School seeks a dynamic, full-time, English teacher for the 2023-2024 academic year. English in the Middle School focuses on developing a student-centered approach that underscores the importance of integrating conceptual workshops, writing workshops, and class seminars in order to encourage self-discovery and celebrate autonomy of thought. Formal vocabulary and grammar lessons are taught within the context of improving communication skills, both written and oral. Ultimately, students improve their abilities to articulately express ideas and critically analyze literature. Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Teach all sections of 8th Grade English. Intense focus on developing students’ reading, writing and critical analysis skills. Serve as a Grade 8 Advisor: Responsibilities include advocating for the students, communicating with parents about advisees’ progress, guiding advisees through daily school life, sharing information and leading discussions. Teacher Collaboration: Attend regular meetings for Grade 8 with student support teams to discuss concerns and progress. Collaborate with the 8th Grade History teacher and 6th and 7th Grade English teachers to coordinate a clear scope and sequence from grade to grade in terms of both subject matter and skill development. Collaborates with the Director of Teaching and Learning, Middle School Dean of Student Life, and School Counselors when appropriate to ensure students are being fully supported and challenged. Participate in all required meetings. Perform other supervisory duties as required of all Middle School teachers – recess and snack, lunch, study hall, morning greeting, etc. Communicate with parents/guardians about student and advisee progress as necessary. Requirements: Minimum bachelor’s degree (masters in the Humanities preferred). Strong skills in reading and writing instruction. Possess a sound understanding of the intellectual and social-emotional developmental stages of adolescents. Ability and capacity to nurture student discovery and skill development. Superb organizational skills and ability to manage a series of student information platforms and systems, including Google Classroom, Gmail. Excellent communication skills and the ability to constructively collaborate with colleagues. Demonstrated cross-cultural competence–ability to effectively teach, learn, and engage in a multicultural environment with a diverse student body–in pedagogical practice and multicultural curriculum content. Demonstrated capacity in culturally responsive professional practices, excellent communication skills, and ability to constructively collaborate with colleagues. Demonstrated capacity to thrive in our diverse community, including but not limited to diversity in race, ethnicity, gender identity, socio-economic status, ability/disability, belief, sexual orientation, and national origin according to our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion principles.
