POSITION SUMMARY:
The mission of Pierce College is to create quality educational opportunities for a diverse community of learners to thrive in an evolving world. The Director of Housing oversees both the Homestay Program and The Center for Global Scholars (CGS).
The Homestay Program is responsible for a network of local homestay families who are hosting their Pierce College international students. The priorities of the position include creating a supportive, pleasant home environment for students to succeed in their academic goals. It includes developing safety and security procedures and recruiting, selecting, screening and orienting host families and students, monitoring placements, supporting students and families and terminating homestay families, if necessary. These specific tasks work with the international student services team and the Executive Director of International Education.
The Center for Global Scholars (CGS) is a 63 bed residence hall for Pierce College Students. The purpose of the Resident Hall is to create and develop a welcoming inclusive globally minded learning community based on building a positive experience for both domestic and international students. The priorities in this role include the smooth functioning of the Residence Hall, allocation of resources, and program operations and results. This specific role reports directly the Pierce College Fort Steilacoom President.
The Director of Housing provides leadership, supervision and oversight to these 2 housing programs. Duties include community development, student development, and supervision, administration, building management, implementation of organizational initiatives and general departmental responsibilities.
Administration and Building Management:
Budget Management: The Director of Housing will work closely with the Executive Director of International Education, Pierce College Finance Department, Fort Steilacoom Campus President and the Pierce College Foundation accountant with respect to the housing programs’ staff and activities budget and proposals.
Building/Housing Maintenance: Work with vendors, host families, and college employees to ensure facility and home are maintained to federal, state and local statutes. Ensure that the residence hall maintains the provisions outlined in the fire and safety codes found in the Handbook for Safety and Security Reporting (CLERY), and includes working with local and law enforcement.
Develop the policies and procedures of the CGS Residence Operational Manual, Host Family Manual, and Student Manuals. Be knowledgeable of the departmental policies and processes, along with applicable Pierce College, state, and federal laws and mandates.
Serve as primary point of contact for all departmental paperwork and processes within specified community to both the International Office, Student Services, and the Fort Steilacoom President with any information regarding residents of a concerning nature.
Serve as primary point of contact for homestay students and families, overseas recruiting agencies, college staff, and outside resources.
Maintain and manage current data on all applicants, occupancy, student conduct, supply inventory and damage reports; including placement coordination for all students in housing and host families, airport transportation arrangements and arrival itineraries.
Assess physical condition of rooms and homes before and after occupancy, preparing and filling the correct forms in a timely fashion.
Create and manage databases on applicants, occupancy, and student conduct codes; assist in ensuring all payments are made.
Provide ongoing communication to stakeholders, distribution of information, to prospective students, current students/residents, host families, and general public.
Manage the coordination of all staff recruitment, training and evaluation for housing staff including interns, student staff, and resident advisors.
Manage recruitment, screening, selection, and orientation of all host families; including background checks.
Manage all office procedures including day to day operations, night coverage and staffing concerns; monitor logs, and student, staff and host family meetings.
Assist facilities in conjunction with appropriate maintenance and custodial staff, including key audits, weekly walk through of facilities, and other appropriate follow-up.
Maintain all social media, websites, and information available for housing programs.
Community Development and Leadership:
Demonstrate commitment to development of housing communities through positive relationship building with all campus partners, and creating experiential opportunities that enhance the social, educational, community, and personal development of residents and inspiring residents to be active participants, if applicable.
Assist students, host families and staff in their adjustment to roommates and community living. Meet individually with residents and host families on a consistent basis.
Conduct meetings for the purpose of planning experiences, disseminating information and explaining policies and procedures.
Be visible and present in the program through host family meetings, office hours, and the residence hall.
Student Development and Learning:
Develop, maintain, and facilitate participation in educational events, workshops and social activities for residents and host families, in collaboration with Student Life, Student Services, and International Education.
Collaborate with Student Services and International Education to develop and achieve residential communities’ initiatives regarding learning outcomes and assessment.
Present all housing orientations and educational programs related to safety, wellness, and student conduct codes, in collaboration with Student Services staff.
Provide behavioral intervention to students and host families including counseling, mentoring, mediation, problem solving, policy violations, and referrals to appropriate campus resources, in collaboration with the BITA Team and Student Services.
Crisis Management:
Respond to medical, safety, and security emergencies and to students in personal crisis as needed in conjunction with Pierce College policies and procedures, serve as departmental representative in these situations and exercise independent judgment while maintaining communication with appropriate department representatives and supervisors.
Manage and implement crisis/health/emergency resource system for all students in both programs and host families.
Respond to emergencies as required, and be on call 24/7 in case of emergency.
Manage all conflicts and intervene when necessary in situations that involve health, safety, or damage of property.
Perform mediation and interventions as needed.
Work with college risk management team to resolve any issues regarding health/safety, facilities, privacy, medical care, conflict in order to protect the interests of the college.
Review incident reports, follow up with students and hosts involved in incident
Marketing and Promotion:
Develop marketing materials for homestay and CGS to promote the program, deliver oral presentations and/or orientations, trainings, and workshops or seminars.
Work with marketing and communications department to utilize all advertising options such as social media, public and campus outlets for advertising housing program
Other Duties as Assigned:
Serve on departmental committees.
Work on special job-related projects as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required Education:
Bachelors degree.
Required Experience:
Two academic year’s student residence hall leadership experience or student affairs related experience OR one academic year of professional experience in a residence hall setting or student affairs related position.
Supervisory experience and effective supervisory skills to include coaching and mentoring to support employees in achieving the college mission and their individual professional goals; demonstrated ability to provide strong leadership in a dynamic work environment.
Special Requirements:
The successful candidate will be required to complete a background check before an official offer of employment can be extended.

Terms of Employment:
This is a full-time (40 hours per week) administrative exempt position with Pierce College District. The primary work location will be Pierce College Fort Steilacoom. Time will be split between Pierce College Fort Steilacoom and the Center for Global Scholars, which is approximately 1.7 miles from the Fort Steilacoom Campus in Lakewood. Infrequent travel to Pierce College campuses or sites may occur. Work hours are between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. This position may be subject to reassignment between campuses or sites.
Salary & Benefits:
The starting salary range of this position is $58,797.00 – $69,995.00 Annually (dependent upon qualifications). However, your paycheck is just part of the total compensation package. Physical Work Environment:
This position works indoors in an office environment. PPE protocols are in place to ensure the health and safety of our students, staff, and visitors. This position will be required to respond to emergencies as required, and be on call 24/7 in case of emergency as listed in the essential functions.
