Position Description
The PrincipalInvestigator, NCWR supports key activities bridging discovery biology andmedicinal chemistry on research projects aimed at pain and addiction. Thecandidate will work with a dynamic team, usually in a leadership role, todesign, implement, and interpret preclinical in vitro and invivo research to elucidate relevant biomarkers, mechanisms ofresponse, drug-related structure-activity relationships, and neuronal circuitryinvolved in substance use disorders and pain. The candidate will also contribute to preparation of documents includinggrant submissions, publications, patents, and study reports. The candidate is expected to be a keycontributor and leader of drug discovery programs/projects while contributingto (and overseeing) designs or new/modified experimental procedures ortechnologies as needed or appropriate. The candidate will accomplish theirresults through a combination of hands-on laboratory experiments, productivecollaborations with other scientists, and via line management of directreports within, and external to the NCWR. The candidate may suggest and evaluate new target areas for researchthat align with the missions and goals of the NCWR. Non-scientificaccountabilities may include but are not limited to performance management,budgets, and developing and directing a talent skill-base and technology-basethat is aligned with NCWR objectives and drives the organizational structurewithin areas of responsibility.
The position reports to the Associate Director of Neuroscience for the NCWR. The candidate may serve ad hoc on scientific leadership teams, contributing to research priorities, goals, milestones, and resource use.
Oklahoma State Universityand Community
Oklahoma State University Center for HealthSciences was founded in 1972 as the Oklahoma College of Osteopathic Medicineand Surgery and became a branch institution of Oklahoma State University in1988. In 2017 the NCWR was publiclylaunched and in 2019 was the recipient of nearly $200M from the legalsettlement between the state of Oklahoma and Purdue Pharma. In 2022, the Oklahoma legislature awarded anARPA grant of $50M for the NCWR to build a pharmaceutical research facility indowntown Tulsa, which is in progress. These funds are being leveraged to advance the science of addiction andpain, so that NCWR researchers and clinicians can rapidly translate newtreatment modalities to patient care. Tofurther accelerate the mission, the NCWR formed a strategic researchpartnership with the Center of Excellence for Addiction Studies at theUniversity of Arizona, where there are already joint research projectsunderway. In the Tulsa region, the NCWRalso hopes to recruit new biotech industry as collaborators and at least twonew companies have already formed here.

Requirements:
– Ph.D. in a field related to biochemistry, cell biology, molecular biology or related field, or equivalent experience
– 5 years of post-Ph.D. experience in academic, industrial, or related field with a sustained productivity
– Conducted and published novel results from their own research activities.
Skills, Proficiencies, andKnowledge:
– Experience developingproject goals that are measurable and time-bound
– Demonstrated track-record of collaboration and mentoring
– Highly effective communicator, written and verbal communication
– Ability to work independently to achieve goals that align with the mission
– Self-motivation, attention to detail, and entrepreneurial mindset
– Ability to work with young researchers as a mentor
Preferred:
– Conducted and published novel results from their own research activities
– Strong background in the biology of addiction and pain, and high proficiency with animal models and in vitro techniques
– Candidate prerequisites include history of scientific productivity and prior experience in drug discovery and early clinical development in the biotech or pharmaceutical industry
– Experience with state-of-the-art pharmacological methods/instruments and molecular biological techniques
– Therapeutic area experience in the fields of pain and addiction biology
