General Description:
The ASL Interpreter & Disability Student Advisor (Interpreter) ensures deaf students using sign language for communication have those needs met in the classroom and throughout the college, either by providing direct services or scheduling part time interpreters, and liaisons with faculty for these students. In addition, this position serves as an advocate for students who are deaf or hard of hearing (HOH) by appropriately providing necessary information about deafness, cultural aspects of the Deaf culture and sign language to administrators, faculty, staff and the community. As Disability Support, this position is responsible for determining appropriate accommodations for students with disabilities and assisting faculty and students in getting accommodations implemented.

Minimum Education/Experience:
Associate of Arts in Interpreting and Oklahoma Quality Assurance Screening Test (QAST) certification level III in both transliteration and interpreting;
OR
Associate of Arts in Interpreting and national certification from Registry of Interpreters (RID) for the Deaf or National Deaf Association.
AND
Previous work experience interpreting and/or tutoring for deaf and HOH individuals
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Ability to work flexible hours to include evenings and occasional weekends as needed.
Ability to communicate effectively in a higher education setting.
Demonstrated positive human relations and communication skills.
Basic computer skills, proficient in the use of Microsoft Office or similar software.
Committed to helping students achieve their goals to be successful and attain a college education.
Willingness to learn computer programs used in the department and on campus (such as Titanium and Moodle).
Organization and attention to detail.
Ability to work independently and coordinate work with colleagues and peers.
Ability to work well as a team member in an instructional unit.
Ability to communicate and articulate concepts in an organized manner verbally, by signing, and in writing.
Ability to read and understand content in order to assist students when they are having difficulty interpreting concepts verbally.
Ability to interact in an effective and encouraging manner with students individually and in groups.

Physical Demands/Working Conditions:
1. GENERAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Medium work: This position requires the person to occasionally exert up to 20 pounds of force and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to grasp, lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
2. PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:
This position requires the person to frequently move about the various campuses.
This position requires the person to frequently communicate with and listen to students, faculty, staff, administration, and others to perform the essential functions of the position. Must be able to exchange accurate information in various situations.
This position requires the person to frequently remain in a standing and stationary position.
This position requires the person to frequently operate a computer, other office machinery, and mobile devices to perform the essential functions of the position.
This position requires the person to frequently use repetitive motions of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
This position requires the person to frequently position self to access materials that may be above head or at ground level.
This position requires the person to use upper and lower body to exert force up to 20 pounds to move or lift materials or equipment.
3. VISUAL ACUITY:
This position requires the person to judge, observe and assess the accuracy, neatness, thoroughness of work assigned or to make general observations.
4. WORKING CONDITIONS
This position’s essential functions are performed both indoors and outdoors.
This position requires the person to occasionally be exposed to hazards such as but not limited to: close proximity to moving mechanical parts and/or electrical current and exposure to high heat or exposure to chemicals.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in related field.
Previous interpreting experience in a higher education setting.
QAST level V certification or be Nationally certified (NIC)
Required Training:
Annual Health and Safety trainings
Trainings determined appropriate by HR or the College

Monday – Friday 8 – 5
Some evenings and weekends as needed.

Job Duties (Position Specific):

Job Duties (Duties Assignment Statement):
Primary duty is to interpret in classroom and other educational settings (i.e., Admissions, Student Success Advising, Learning Labs, etc.).
Coordinate the scheduling and logistics for sign language interpreting in the classroom. Including outside help as needed.
Conduct intake interviews with students in need of accommodations.
Assist the Coordinator in implementing appropriate accommodations and assist with alternative testing accommodations, auxiliary aids and services, alternative media, assistive technology and other duties as needed.
Maintain guidelines and policies necessary for part-time interpreters as related to the classroom environment.
Provide and/or arrange for interpreting services for other College wide activities as determined by the Coordinator of Disability Services or Director of Student Accessibility and Support (i.e., graduation).
Must maintain Oklahoma Quality Assurance Screening Test (QAST), Quality Assurance equivalent certification of level III or above or maintain national certification from RID or NAD and strive to continually improve signing skills and seek to upgrade certification.
Maintains the videophone service for students and the community.
Other duties will be assigned as needed.

Adhere to established safety and health procedures and practices for the purpose of providing injury and illness prevention for self and others.
Complete quarterly health and safety training pursuant to OCCC’s established safety and health procedures and practices.
Participate in all applicable OCCC emergency evacuation, move to safer area, and shelter in place drills and be prepared to take action and assist others in taking appropriate action should a health or safety emergency occur.
