Position Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Research Technician.
The NYU Experimental Pathology Research Laboratory is a fee-for-service laboratory operated by the NYU Langone Health (NYULH) as a state-of-the-art shared resource for biomedical researchers. The Experimental Pathology staff members develop and provide their knowledge and expertise to the research community at NYULH in a broad variety of histology- and imaging-based research methods. They work closely with investigators to define optimal experimental design and troubleshooting.
The individual will work as part of a team in the production of tissue and histological specimens in the most optimal fashion, ensuring the highest possible quality. The position encompasses a variety of duties, including histochemical staining, maintaining reagents and assisting with tissue processing and sectioning of animal specimens used for biomedical research. The individual will assist senior and supervisory staff members in all advanced procedures.
Job Responsibilities:
* Demonstrates knowledge of the organization’s core values and incorporates them into the performance of duties.
* Initiates, interprets, organizes, executes, and coordinates assignments critical to the Experimental Pathology Research Laboratory research mission.
* Performs the majority of histochemical staining (standard hematoxylin and eosin staining as well as a variety of special histochemical stains), and assists the Laboratory Manager and senior staff in the development of new protocols to improve quality, workflow and cost-effectiveness.
* Assists with accessioning and tracking tissue specimens submitted to the Core.
* Assists in specimen processing, embedding, and QC of both frozen and paraffin-embedded samples.
* Maintains relevant equipment (e.g. automated tissue processor and stainers) and reagents.
* Works with senior staff to monitor chemical storage and waste as well as facilitate appropriate chemical disposal.
* Trains other staff and researchers in areas of personal expertise.
* Seeks guidance as necessary for the performance of duties.
* Questions when in doubt and utilize reference sources/materials to ensure accuracy.
* Advises appropriate personnel of situations/problems requiring intervention or follow-up attention.
* Cooperates, communicates and relates well to all levels of Medical Center Staff.
* Listens carefully to others in order to respond appropriately, answer questions or obtain needed information.
* Communicates ideas, problems, suggestions, and messages in a timely and effective manner.
* Maintains and updates technical knowledge.
* Participates and performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify you must have a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Life Sciences or a related field with one year of experience. Advanced (beyond basic lab training will be accepted in lieu of experience as assessed by the hiring Principal Investigator). Effective oral and written communication skills required.
Preferred Qualifications:
Prior experience with cryo and/or paraffin tissue sectioning.
Prior experience performing histochemical and/or immunohistochemical staining.
Familiarity with basic imaging modalities, including brightfield and fluorescence microscopes and scanners.
Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York state Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $50,000.00 – $56,160.00 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
