Within research Informatics for Biomedical Research, the Engineering department delivers excellence in software, data, and core engineering. It is responsible for building powerful, functional, beautiful, and secure scientific and IT software solutions that accelerate scientific research and deliver a fully integrated and frictionless user experience. The Engineering department is also responsible for providing engineering resources that create and maintain these software solutions in line with the priorities and roadmaps defined by the product teams and our business stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
As Head of the Core Engineering department, your role is to lead a high performing core engineering team with a focus on operational excellence and owning the interface with corporate infrastructure services across our entire ecosystem of platforms, products and infrastructure services. This role will also be responsible for:
•Serve on the Engineering Leadership Team to shape and guide organizational strategy and culture as we look to become an innovation engine that multiplies scientific discovery by an order of magnitude.
•Represent Engineering in the cross-divisional planning team, providing feedback and impact assessments on infrastructure-related matters.
•Provide strategic infrastructure planning in the interface with corporate IT, working cross-functionally to support each NIBR SPOC as well as interact with corporate IT solution delivery and capability leads.
•Work on continuous improvement of corporate IT interface.
•Support escalations of infrastructure-related incidents when seriously affecting large parts of engineering.
•Be a key member of technical architecture reviews for the physical architecture aspects.
•Collaborate to form the infrastructure strategy pillar of the NIBR technology strategy.
•Collaborate and help guide HPC strategy and associated infrastructure, developing relationships within NX and the scientific end users. Be the key contact from engineering in corporate wide infrastructure efforts like Data Center Transformation.
•Drive for high degrees of automation and self-service to minimize support and maintenance costs, enable efficient scalability of our platforms and services to users, and to enable and empower NX users to be self-sufficient and therefore more effective at delivering value to the science with velocity and agility
•Leading all people management aspects of a global core engineering team
•Participating in personnel management practices regarding recruitment and selection, adequate staffing, performance appraisals, education and training, and management development.
•Ensuring an engaged, innovative, and inspiring working environment in the department by motivating, challenging, and coaching employees towards growth.
The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $166,400 and $249,600/year; however, while salary ranges are effective from 1/1/23 through 12/31/23, fluctuations in the job market may necessitate adjustments to pay ranges during this period. Further, final pay determinations will depend on various factors, including, but not limited to geographical location, experience level, knowledge, skills and abilities. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a sign-on bonus, restricted stock units, and discretionary awards in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment. If hired, employee will be in an “at-will position” and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.

Role Requirements
Essential Requirements
•Bachelors or masters degree in Computer Science, Informatics or similar, or equivalent practical experience
•10+ years of hands-on software development, system administration, or infrastructure engineering experience with 5+ years in a managerial role and 5+ years with cloud and SaaS (Software as a Service) based solutions
•Expert knowledge of DevOps + Cloud technologies including infrastructure-as-code and immutable infrastructure patterns
•Prior experience as an infrastructure engineer + leading technical teams
•Successful practical experience with Agile and Lean methodologies and with creating a strong DevOps culture
•Strong organizational, problem-solving, and influencing skills and demonstrated track record of exceptional teamwork
•Excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills
•Ability to travel 10%
