JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
2. Implements education plan according to Head Start Performance Standards, written plans, assigned center option, and curriculum guidelines to provide a sound foundation for achieving positive child outcomes.
3. As a primary responsibility, ensures the safety and security of all children at all times by observation, head counts, troubleshooting risks, and working as a team member with the bus driver and center staff.
4. Supervises assigned classroom staff to ensure the education plan is being implemented on a daily basis and monitors appropriate child/adult interaction.
5. Completes documentation, approve/disapproves leave requests, arranges coverage for all classroom staff, monitors training, completes evaluations and disciplines classroom staff supervised by position.
6. Establishes positive relationships with families, children and co-workers.
7. Designs the classroom environment to support the development of cognitive, social, self-help and physical skills through interesting and varied learning experiences.
8. Utilizes the curriculum to develop appropriate lessons that promote children’s higher order thinking and in-depth learning experiences through a variety of learning activities.
9. Individualizes lessons based on observation and documentation of children’s emerging skills and Individual Education Plan (IEP) objective, screening and assessment results.
10. Completes initial screening questionnaires for all children within 45-day entry into the program and enters assessment data per scheduled timelines.
11. Utilizes classroom activities that encourage children to problem-solve and become decision-makers during individual, small and large group interactions.
12. Utilizes and models positive discipline techniques in the classroom and during home visits following program Positive Behavioral Support/Discipline Policy and self-regulation curriculum.
13. Maintains a stable, calm, and supportive environment by providing a predictable routine, fostering positive social behaviors, assisting children in dealing with their feelings, and being responsive to children’s needs.
14. Keeps child on task by asking questions, calling child by name, getting on the child’s level which includes sitting and kneeling on the floor (for individual communication and group activities), and using appropriate body contact.
16. Utilizes various teaching strategies that include a balanced daily program of child-initiated and adult-directed activities, reflect various racial and ethnic cultures, support each child’s learning style, and family goals.
17. Conducts two home visits on a schedule determined by program option to explain the curriculum and assessment and promote the parent as the child’s most important teacher.
18. Conducts two parent-teacher conferences per year to discuss and receive input on the child’s developmental progress and to assist in family support of child’s education.
19. Recruits/enrolls eligible children and families by soliciting applications from families on a year-round basis.
20. Recruits parent volunteers to assist with classroom activities and field trips.
21. Builds skills of parent volunteers in child development knowledge and appropriate activities through modeling and guidance in order to provide a supportive environment for all children.
22. Completes and submits all records and reports in a timely manner.
24. Attends conferences and trainings as requested with possible overnight travel.
25. Assists with cleaning duties when other duties are complete.
26. Reviews and documents any updates changes to the Family Partnership Agreement, Family Journal and Family Assessment during home visits and informs the Family Resource Advocate.
27. Ride as Bus Aide when necessary.
28. Assists with maintaining a neat, sanitary, safe environment that is an excellent learning environment for children, staff and volunteers.
29. Performs other duties as assigned as related to position.
QUALIFICATIONS
1. Associate, baccalaureate or advanced degree in Early Childhood Education or Child Development preferred, or;
2. Degree in a related field, which includes at least 12 credits in early childhood education or child development.
3. Supervisory experience preferred.
4. One-year experience in a preschool or similar setting preferred.
5. Excellent communication skills with children and adults.
6. Ability to work with children and families from diverse backgrounds.
7. Ability to work independently as a positive member of a team.
8. Valid driver’s license, safe driving record, and the ability to drive around in the service area.
9. Ability to understand and effectively work with children with special needs.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE JOB/FREQUENCY
1. Standing for extended periods/daily.
2. Excessive bending, kneeling, sitting on floor, and lifting of children ages zero to five/daily.
3. Patience and tolerance to deal with a large group of children/daily.
4. Ability to keep pace with children by moving quickly.’
