Job Summary
The Student Success Advisor builds partnerships and develops interpersonal relationships that guide, advocate, and empower NTC students to achieve their full potential for success in diverse environments. Advisors guide the learning journey and provide case management services to ensure academic success and program completion. The Student Success Advisor plays a key role in helping students understand the NTC environment, including demands and expectations of college; Advisors serve students in-person and/or virtually throughout the NTC district and beyond. This individual will report to the Director of Advising and Student Success.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
The following duties are primarily performed and are essential for this position. Employees are expected to be able to perform each of these job duties satisfactorily and successfully with or without reasonable accommodations.
Serve as point of contact for students being admitted to assigned programs which may be delivered in-person, online, or a combination. Meet with new students to develop relationships, create an academic plan, provide resources, and assist in identifying career and academic goals.
Engage in proactive advising activities to identify and support students who may benefit from advising services. Monitor student performance to provide timely intervention for students struggling with coursework and/or attendance.
Utilize proactive intervention strategies to provide case management from program acceptance to completion through timely, appropriate, and accurate information regarding program of study, program requirements, course content, course selection, prerequisites, recommended course load, credit for prior learning process, retention supports, transfer and career services, and graduation.
Develop appropriate action plans to guide students through their program curriculum, to be aware of external credentialing requirements, and achieve desired career and/or transfer goals.
Assist students in complying with academic policies and procedures, appeals, and processes.
Contact students who have not re-enrolled or completed their program to support retention and completion initiatives. Utilize the Advising Communication Plan to reach out to students at prescribed times to support recruitment and retention strategies.
Participate in team meetings, professional development activities, and college-wide committees as assigned and appropriate.
Participate in and support NTC activities related to equity, inclusion, diversity, and belonging.
Assist in planning, promoting, and facilitating events that support student engagement and success, such as information sessions, panels, workshops, etc.
Coordinate advising activities for program students at Regional Campuses in collaboration with Career Coaches and Regional Campus staff using all available methods of service delivery.
Work collaboratively with fellow Student Success Advisors and Student Connection Specialists along with other areas of the college including Academic Excellence, Admissions, Career and Transfer Services, Disability and Testing, Financial Aid, “School of” & Program staff (Deans, Faculty, Learning Coordinators, etc), Student Finance, and Student Records to help improve and refine College student experiences and processes.
Collaborate with community partners providing services to students (Job Center, VA offices, etc).
Use web services and software programs such as Workday, PeopleSoft, MS Office Suite, Starfish, Canvas, Panopto and other programs to assist in meeting objectives of NTC.
Comply with federal, state, and NTC student policies and procedures, including FERPA.
Accurately document student interactions and situations in concise and timely manner.
Complete activity reports and enter data for retention, tracking and grant accountability.
Demonstrate a commitment to NTC’s mission, core beliefs and strategic direction.
Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications Required
In limited circumstances, NTC may consider a combination of education, training, and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of this position.
Education: Bachelor’s degree in education or related field
Master’s degree preferred.
Experience: At least three years related work experience in a higher education institution.
Advising, career planning, and placement services.
Knowledge and understanding of college admissions, career services, financial aid, and transfer processes.
Working knowledge of current technologies and computer software.
Demonstrated skill in interpersonal communications and human relations with populations of diverse socio-economic and racial backgrounds.
Preferred: Teaching experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to plan, organize, promote, and implement campus events and educational workshops in multiple modalities.
Ability to work in a collaborative, team-oriented environment.
Ability to establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with faculty, staff, and students.
Ability to work independently.
Skill in communicating effectively, both orally and in writing.
Ability to travel to various locations within the district.
Employment is conditional on compliance regarding the completion of a Criminal Background Check.
