A Living and Learning Village is a place where students, staff, and faculty are engaged around common learning outcomes to Think and Do in a shared residential environment. Villages provide connected curricular and co-curricular experiences to foster a sense of belonging, cultivate an intellectually enriching environment, and support the development of the whole student. As content-area professionals, Program Directors sustain all aspects of the program’s day-to-day operations, programmatic leadership, and long-term vision and strategic planning for Village enhancement and growth. In alignment with invested strategic partners in academic and campus units as well as University Housing’s Residence Education Model (REM), the Program Director creates and implements holistic experiential learning opportunities for students. As one of our 15 Living and Learning Communities, the Engineering Village provides experiential learning opportunities for approximately 730 engineering students to build relationships and establish a sense of community and belonging with the College of Engineering and NC State. The village is focused on creating a community of care to support students’ wellness, personal and academic success. The village helps students build skills to reach their long-term goals by connecting them with campus partners for internships, co-ops, undergraduate research, and study abroad opportunities. Students in the village also have access to an in-house Design Studio/MakerSpace for class or personal projects, prototyping, and hands-on design challenges. The goal of the Engineering Village is to help students explore their academic options prior to joining an engineering major department and develop skills, talents, and behaviors that will enable them to address complex challenges facing our community and the world. The Program Director works closely with campus partners, including the College of Engineering, Wilson College of Textiles, NC State Libraries, and Career Development Center to scaffold and sequence curricular and co-curricular experiences to promote learning and achievement of program goals and student learning outcomes of the College of Engineering’s First Year Engineering Program. The Program Director teaches a section of E101 – Introduction to Engineering and Problem Solving and E102 – Engineering in the 21st Century for the College of Engineering. Sections of the course will include students participating in the Engineering Village. The courses focus on the engineering design cycle, interdisciplinary teamwork, and problem-solving from a general engineering perspective, the 14 Grand Challenges for Engineering, and goes more depth on the College’s 18 degree programs and 12 departments. The Program Director evaluates the success of the program toward achieving goals and objectives through an assessment plan and strategies that enable data-driven decision-making and continuous program improvement. Reporting Structure: The Program Director formally reports to the Associate Director for Living Learning Programs and will have expectations to support strategic initiatives developed by First Year Engineering Programs and the College of Engineering.
