The college has over 1,900 students studying across five graduate certificates, seven undergraduate majors, two undergraduate minors, 13 master’s degrees, three Ph.D., and two Ed.D. programs housed in three academic departments: Educational Leadership, Policy, and Human Development; Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Education; and Teacher Education and Learning Sciences, with approximately 130 tenure-track and professional-track faculty, 110 support and professional staff, and about 160 graduate and teaching assistants. The College of Education is also home to the Belk Center for Community College Leadership and Research and the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation.
The college has over 17,000 living alumni, with over 5,000 working in public schools in North Carolina. Those who are teachers rate the highest in effectiveness on surveys of school employers in North Carolina.
About the Department of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Education
The Department of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Education (STEM ED) comprises over 24 full-time faculty members, 400 undergraduate students, and over 150 graduate students. STEM ED advances education through scholarship, leadership, and advocacy. Faculty in STEM ED prepare professionals who have deep content knowledge, demonstrate a strong working knowledge of effective discipline-based pedagogies, and realize the potential of digital technologies to enhance learning. The department offers a Ph.D. in Learning and Teaching in STEM with areas of specialization in Mathematics and Statistics Education, Science Education, and Engineering and Technology Education. The department also offers an online Master of Education degree in STEM Education, with additional areas of concentration in Mathematics and Statistics Education, Science Education, and Engineering and Technology Education. In addition, STEM ED offers undergraduate programs in Science Education, Mathematics Education, and Technology, Engineering and Design Education as well as online Masters of Art in Teaching programs in all three content areas. Through the bachelor’s, master’s, Ph.D., minors, and certificate programs, the department exemplifies an innovative merging of teacher education and the learning sciences that results in new pathways for teaching, scholarship, leadership, and service.
Essential Job Duties:
The Department Head for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Education (STEM ED) is a thought leader who sets the strategic direction for the department, in support of the vision and mission of the college and the university. The Department Head provides leadership to faculty and staff in the department by supporting and building community, and by providing a vision for programming growth and improvement. The Department Head is responsible for departmental budgeting, budget control, and all staffing. The Department Head also oversees all administrative matters and departmental processes, which may include, and is not limited to, faculty recruitment and professional development, faculty evaluation, faculty mentoring, promotion and tenure, program development, program review, curriculum development, student advisement and development, class schedule planning, and general supervision of the teaching, research, and service and related scholarly activities of the department. The Department Head promotes the department through representation in college, university, and external strategic initiatives and may engage in research, teaching, doctoral education, publication, externally funded projects, and other
professorial activities.
Other Responsibilities:
The STEM Education Department Head reports to the Dean of the College and is responsible for the administration of the department and is a member of the college leadership team. The STEM Education Department Head provides leadership in support of faculty research, teaching, and service efforts; recruits, hires, and supervises faculty and staff; manages departmental budgets; and promotes the department through representation in college, university, and external strategic initiatives. As a member of the college leadership team, the individual is responsible for ensuring the department’s strategies and direction are aligned with the goals and objectives of the college. This position may also engage in research, teaching publication, externally funded projects, and other professional activities.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Requires doctorate degree in an area that aligns with those of the faculty and programs in the Department of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Education. A distinguished record of scholarship sufficient for appointment as a full professor with tenure at NC State.
