Dept Molecular Biomedical Science
About the Department:
The Department of Molecular Biomedical Sciences is one of three departments at the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) and consists of 41 faculty who have a diversity of research and
teaching interests which includes faculty in the clinical disciplines of Anesthesia, Radiology, Clinical Nutrition and Clinical Pharmacology. The Comparative Biomedical Sciences graduate program in CVM consists of several different “tracks”, allowing students to focus their research in the areas of cell biology, infectious diseases, pharmacology, pathology, and population medicine. Other graduate programs with which department faculty are affiliated at NCSU include programs in immunology, physiology, functional genomics, microbiology, toxicology and genetics.
North Carolina State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) is a dynamic community whose members are dedicated to preparing veterinarians and veterinarian scientists while advancing animal and human health from the cellular level through entire ecosystems.
The Van Landeghem lab explores how adult multipotent intestinal stem cells are controlled by signals emanating from their microenvironment in health and diseases. We especially focus on cues derived from local neural cells that belong to the enteric nervous system, also called the second brain. We also study how nutritional disorders and nutritional interventions during development and adulthood affect intestinal stem cells and their communication with cells of the enteric nervous system. Our lab routinely uses cell culture (primary and cell lines), fluorescence-
activating cell sorting and flow cytometry, transgenic mouse models (stem cell-reporter and knock out models and immunodeficient models), microdissection (layers of the gut wall), immunofluorescence (wholemount, sections and 2D cultures), microscopy (fluorescence, confocal, real time, light sheet), biochemistry (western blot, ELISA) and molecular biology (RT- qPCR, siRNA/shRNA) techniques.
