Department Summary & Job Purpose:
The Area Coordinator (AC) of Community Standards is a 12-month live-in position. The coordinator has overall responsibility for a student residence area on campus that consists of 6 to 8 residence halls. This involves direct supervision and development of Residential Fellows and Resident Advisors. The coordinator collaborates with the Assistant Vice President of Student Life Engagement, the Executive Director of Residential Life, and the Associate Director of Residential Life & Orientation to create an environment where individual responsibility and respect for differences are fostered and valued. Additionally, the coordinator has to plan and promote programmatic initiatives supporting community development. Each Area Coordinator has a collateral assignment with the Office of Student Involvement, the Be Well Program, Community Standards, or the Office of Community & Belonging. A partially furnished apartment with utilities is included. This is an ideal position for a new professional. This is an entry-level position with a limit of three years, with a possible extension for one additional year max.
Department Summary:
The Department of Student Engagement, which is part of the Division of Student Life, includes Community Standards, Residential Life, Student Involvement, Be Well, and Orientation. These departments work in partnership with Mount Holyoke College students to create inclusive, compassionate, and authentic communities and organizations. They challenge and support students as they navigate their co-curricular experience at a residential college.

The ideal candidate should demonstrate a solid commitment to both students and their personal and professional growth. They need a positive attitude and excitement towards their work and be able to share that with others. They should have the ability to take initiative, work independently, and be a vital team member. In addition, the ideal candidate should have strong communication skills and be able to exercise sound judgment. The desire to have fun and laugh often are highly valued.
• Bachelor’s degree
• Must have an understanding of, and demonstrated commitment to, the values and expectations of a women’s college that is a gender-diverse, research liberal arts college
• Demonstrated intercultural, diversity, and inclusion competencies and a commitment to working with diverse populations
• Working knowledge of principles, practices, and theories of student learning and development; understanding of the cultural, social, and educational needs of students in residential communities
• Demonstrated ability to creatively and efficiently solve problems, using sound judgment, assuming ownership of a problem, and resolving challenges in a collaborative manner
• Demonstrated organizational skills.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally.
• Demonstrated commitment to supporting the department’s goal of creating and engaging in inclusive, compassionate, and authentic communities
• Experience working in settings that proactively and reactively support the mental health needs of young adults
Preferred Qualifications:
• Master’s degree in higher education/student affairs or equivalent is preferred
• Agility and familiarity with Google Suite, Canva, database systems such as Residence, Starfish, Colleague, CampusGroups, and computer literacy preferred
• Experience working with residential life living-learning communities
• Experience working with international students
• Experience working with the LGBTQIA+ community
• Experience working with those who identify as Black, Asian, Latine/o/a/x, Native or Indigenous, and/or multiracial
• Experience working with first-generation college students
License/Certifications:
• A Valid Driver’s License allows the employee to be certified to drive one of the vehicles in Mount Holyoke College’s small fleet for departmental use. Not a requirement.
