Position Function:
The Director is the voice of mental health services on campus and provides leadership,
vision and advocacy for Mississippi State students. The Director oversees the delivery of services to MSU students including individual and
group therapy, prevention and educational programs and workshops, crisis management, and acute hospitalization and management. The Director
also has responsibilities including hiring and supervising clinical and support staff, collaboration and consultation with MSU faculty and
staff serving students and providing direct clinical services as available.
Salary Grade : 18

Counseling Services supports the academic mission of Mississippi State University by facilitating the social, psychological, and academic

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Oversight of the student counseling center including supervision of staff, budget and administrative functions.
2.
Provide vision, strategic planning, and assessment for the center to advance department and divisional mission.
3. Hire, supervise and
support professional development opportunities for staff.
4. Provide consultation on campus and in the community regarding mental
health issues of students; provide vision for MSU in addressing national and campus concerns through prevention and education regarding the
developmental and mental health of students as well as harm-reduction.
5. Develop and administer center protocols and procedures in
keeping with national and regional current best-practices for campus counseling centers.
6. Coordinate the center’s emergency and
crisis response procedures and participate in university behavioral intervention and threat assessment activities.
7. Collaborate with
colleagues across campus to develop strategies for optimizing student strengths and healthy development and for the prevention and
intervention of psychological and behavioral concerns.
8. Support the International Association of Counseling Services, Inc. (IACS)
accreditation of MSU Student Counseling Services, valuing the highest standards of clinical and professional practice and supporting the
highest quality of training to masters and doctoral level counseling and psychology students.
9. Night and weekend work is occasionally
required.
10. Perform other administrative and clinical duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibility:
This position
has full supervisory authority that include Assistant Director, two psychologists, ten staff counselors, two full-time staff, three graduate
assistants and three practicum students.

duties and responsibilities may vary based upon departmental needs. Other duties may be assigned to the above consistent with the knowledge,
skills and abilities required for the job. Not all of the duties may be assigned to a position.
Minimum Qualifications:
Minimum Required Education: Masters degree with a focus on Counseling Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Counseling or
related
Minimum Required Experience: 5 years of practice; with 5 years (post license) clinical experience and 2 years
administrative/supervisory experience
Certification or Licensure Requirements: Must be licensed or license-eligible in the State of
Mississippi within six months of employment as a therapist, maintaining license continuously for the duration of employment.
Preferred Qualifications:
1. Three years demonstrated administrative experience including supervisory, financial
management, and strategic planning responsibilities. Preferably as a Director, Associate Director or Assistant Director in a counseling
center.
2. Doctorate in an applicable discipline.
3. 5-8 years at a university counseling center with three years in a supervisory
role.
4. Working knowledge of Titanium electronic records system.
5. Experience in crisis management and knowledge of Behavioral
Intervention Teams and Crisis Action Teams.
6. Affiliation with state and national professional organization.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
1. Proficiency in the use of technology to support clinic operations
2. Excellent
interpersonal, written and oral communication skills
3. Commitment to diversity and demonstrated competency in multicultural counseling
skills.
4. Ability to consult with and collaborate with University personnel and off-campus mental health and psychiatric services.
5. Experience and training in working successfully with a culturally and ethnically diverse student population.
6. Ability to
interact effectively and professionally with students, faculty, staff and administrators.
7. Knowledge of and adherence to professional
legal, ethical and professional standards endorsed by licensing professional organization.
8. Value involvement and participation
within the Division of Student Affairs.
9. Student-oriented with a wellness focus
Working Conditions and Physical
Effort
No unusual physical requirements. Requires no heavy lifting, and nearly all work is performed in a comfortable
indoor facility. Externally imposed deadlines; set and revised beyond one’s control; interruptions influence priorities; difficult to
anticipate nature or volume of work with certainty beyond a few days; travel or irregular hours sometimes anticipated; meeting of deadlines
and coordination of unrelated activities are vital to the position; may involve conflict-resolution or similar interactions involving
emotional issues or stress. Job frequently requires walking, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, and handling objects with hands. The job
requires standing, stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling, and lifting up to 10 pounds.
