BACKGROUND: Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD) is dedicated to educating the next generation of creative leaders. Founded in 1886 as part of Minneapolis Institute of Art (Mia), MCAD became a wholly independent nonprofit institution in 1988. Since then, MCAD has grown into a successful and fully accredited art and design college with a current enrollment of approximately 800 undergraduate and graduate students.
The campus is located adjacent to the Minneapolis Institute of Art in the vibrant Whitter neighborhood, a historic district in the heart of Minneapolis. The college, known for its signature building designed by the Pritzker Prize-winning Japanese architect Kenzo Tange, is situated in one of the country’s most arts-supportive regions. Bolstered by its robust and diverse economy, Minnesota ranks first in the nation in per-capita public funding of the arts, and Minneapolis ranks as the fifth most creative city in the country according to the Creative City Index, which analyzes data from the U.S. Census Bureau and Bureau of Labor Statistics.
MCAD is a leader in innovative programming and curricula in art and design education. In 2000, MCAD was the first art college to start online master’s degree programs and has made substantial investments in technology for labs and classrooms. In 2006, the college introduced a core curriculum that integrated its strong studio programs with a liberal arts framework complemented by practical and professional learning, including required internships for all students. In 2016–17, MCAD restructured and expanded its Entrepreneurial Studies Department, adding new courses to create an undergraduate program that helps students start and run their own enterprises or entrepreneurial endeavors and become effective creative leaders.
In 2018, MCAD introduced an undergraduate major in product design, complementing the college’s thirteen other areas of study, which range from animation and sculpture to filmmaking and furniture design. Other recent programmatic additions include undergraduate minors in advertising, art history, creative writing, engaged and public arts, teaching artist, animation, graphic arts, and print paper book. In 2022, the college welcomed its first cohort into the new graduate program–the MA in Creative Leadership.
MCAD is Minnesota’s only independent college of art and design accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC).
